Sometimes it really sucks having kids! Had babysitting lined up so I could go pay my respects at the "viewing" for my husband's bosses wife--a lovely woman who died suddenly and tragically at too young an age. Babysitting fell through! As happens quite often. Now I won't be able to go. Most times, when babysitting falls through, it's really not that big a deal. This time it is. I really want to go and tell the family how sorry I am. Hubby says drive the kids to his sister's house in Hackensack. Great idea (in theory) but it means a hell of a lot more work on my part. Then it occurs to me, the kids first day of school is Wednesday. The viewing is in Westchester, NY, and it starts at 7 PM. Even if we stay 5 minutes, and turn around and come right home, we won't get the kids in Hackensack until after 8, and they won't be home in bed until after 9. That's a bit too late for the night before their first day back. There's also a viewing at 2. Can't even figure how I might be able to get to that one. Would mean scrambling to find a sitter, from very limited resources, and getting my act together and getting out the door around noonish. Would also mean I'd need the sitter for at least 4 hours. Would also mean going without my husband, who will be at work and going directly to Westchester after work for the 7PM viewing. Damn, damn, damn. I really, really wanted to go! |

Thanks Cyn. I sometimes think I should have stopped at 1. Trying to get help with 3 kids can sometimes be a gargantuan undertaking. If I had one, I probably wouldn't have any trouble finding a friend to take the kid. |

Only the 9th graders have to go in on Wed (of the HS kids)... the 10th-12th graders start Thursday. |

Here's a thought. Get them fed dinner early, put them in their P.J.'s, load them in to the car, put on a movie, drive to Westchester, meet hubby, have him wait in the car with the kids (because we all know it's criminal neglect to leave them alone) while I run in, pay my respects, then head home? |

You want me to see if my daughter is available? She's in 12th grade and babysits a lot. School starts Thursday for her.

MATB.. My mom is in St Barnabas, my neice, her granddaughter, came to visit with her husband and her 4 kids, ages 9-2. He came up first to say hi, she waited in the car, then he went to the car and she came up. It worked out ok. Not a horrible solution. |

Thanks so much to everyone who offered help here and in PL's sent to me. It's very likely I would have taken all of you up on your offers. However, luckily for me, things have been worked out. My hubby got my SIL to come this evening and I have the 13-year-old daughter of a friend (who I just happened to run in to at Bagel Chateau this morning) coming around 4 to give me some time to get ready, and stay if I should need to leave before my SIL gets here. Set foot in the house last night at 8, after a summer away, and the chaos has not stopped! I'm hoping things will settle down by Thursday afternoon sometime. Now, off to solve the wardrobe dilemma! |

MATB - so very glad that you got to work this out. I know, from your posts, that this is important. Glock, I will now give you a bedtime...not later than 2:00 AM for you! |

Thanks for asking, JTA. The 13-year-old got here at 4 so I could get ready but, of course, my kids didn't want to have anything to do with her. MY SIL arrived right at 5, like she said. Had I not had someone there to "fill in" in case of a problem, I have no doubt my SIL would have hit horrific traffic on the GSP and not gotten here until 6. Kids didn't want anything to do with my SIL either, but apparently got over that 5 minutes after I left. The drive there wasn't great but it wasn't bad and I arrived about 20 minutes early. The "event" itself was hard, but the boss was unbelievably upbeat and composed. The poor man had to tell me "everything's going to be O.K!" when I broke down! Hope I don't have to do anything that horrible again very soon. |
