We have a common coffee area in the lobby, which serves about 50 people, I'd say. People bring in leftovers from parties, etc. all the time. The goodies are to be enjoyed by everyone. One person even brought fresh flowers from his garden all summer and kept them in a vase. It was very nice. This morning, I brought in half of a fruit tart from Whole Foods. The yummy, short-bread crust, creme-fraiche filled, glazed fruit on top kind. I set the box down on the counter and came to put my stuff at my desk. Went down to the cafeteria to get plates and forks to set next to the tart. I came back up & the whole box was gone. Couldn't have been more than 10 minutes. Just when you think you've seen everything.....

I don't mean to be rude or snarky, but why did you bring the tart in and leave it in the common area if you didn't want people to eat it? |

It was supposed to be eaten by anyone who wanted some. But people come and take a piece, slice, whatever. You are not supposed to pick up the whole box and walk off with it. |

Next time, have someone with a camera standing by. Keep your eyes open for that tart box in somebody's trash bin! |

We had that problem where at Bell Labs, there was a talk every Friday at 3pm and cookies were served. Someone was stealing the leftover cookies, pissing off the people in the organization. They set up a web cam to catch the culprit. It turned out to be someone on the "other side" of the company. I.e. she was in PR, and this was the Research area. Rather than confront the culprit, the next week, they left the video of her stealing the platter playing in the room repeatedly. No more problem.

Tom, don't you see? The people who use the Windows operating system are more prone to steal office cookies and tarts. Makes sense to me. |

Jet - wouldn't you be embarrassed to walk off with an entire pastry box that had been left to share? Although, Dave may be onto something. We do use windows, here. Ya know, I feel like we should chip in and build Duncan his office cube film set. He'd certainly get a lot of mileage out of it. |

Just a random thought. If the tart were of an appropriate size for eight servings, is it possible that the eighth person tossed the box? Ten minutes is quick. But if it looked good, not beyond belief. As I wrote, just a random thought |

Tom Reingold, your story about the covert cookie thief is hilarious. Could the person possibly have thought the cookies were abandoned, unwanted and public somehow? Did it happen more than once, repeatedly, the same person....? Just trying to be sure its what it seems.....and its too funny to take seriously. |

I retold it because it is hilarious. The thief committed the crime many times, which is why the researchers decided to set up the camera to catch her. I don't know what her attitude was, but it seems likely that she saw the cookies as public or abandoned. I think when you work at a multi-national company with hundreds of thousands of employees, you don't typically feel much remorse for taking things that company money paid for. But I'm sure seeing the video gave her a chance to rethink her ethics in that situation. Or maybe she rethought the disposition of the cookies.

Tom - I have to ask, though I hate myself for doing it - was she the type who would need a special over-sized chair? (see my other thread on a similar topic.) i.e., were these cookies for her own, private consumption, or do you suppose she shared them with her immediate-area co-workers? Neither is acceptable of course. Her team could get their own dang cookies if they wanted them. I'm just being kind of nosy. |

It was supposed to be eaten by anyone who wanted some. But people come and take a piece, slice, whatever. You are not supposed to pick up the whole box and walk off with it. greentree, was it pre-sliced or did you leave it in as half a pie? Could've been… 1. the messenger/delivery guy 2. a meeting in progress with hungry staffers 4. employee from a different floor seeing a half box of fruit tart… free game 3. if it said Whole Foods on the box… big mistake for leaving it out, even for a minute. And we all know Whole Foods ain't cheap. This reminds me of an incident that happened to a co-worker some years ago. She made this huge chocolate truffle for the office which she shared. Before others had a chance to try some, a freelancer decided to take in on herself and SHARED it with another department. My co-worker was VERY upset since she stayed-up the night before making this from scratch.

Marge, I don't know how thin or thick the thief was, but I don't remember any super-thick people in the PR department. I don't know what she did with the cookies after acquiring them.

Apochrypal story but goes to the co-worker food thing and it amuses me: I had a friend at work who was going to law school at night so he would bring his dinner in. One day he put an tuna sandwich in the fridge and when he went to get it, it was gone. Being very angry, he posted a note that essentially said, "To who(m)ever took my tuna sandwich, that was my dinner and now I have nothing to eat." The next morning, written on the note was a very simple response, "Too much mayonnaise." ML |
