Has anyone else noticed this or am I going absolutely batty? Over the last few weeks I've been woken up by planes flying overhead between 2-5am. They sound very low like they're about to land, but where the heck are they going? Isn't EWR was closed at that time? I don't think they sound like military planes (which are louder, but move a lot faster), but I'm certainly not an expert. Any one have any ideas? If it keeps up, I'll have to get a white noise machine, but I'm REALLY hoping that this is temporary. They couldn't change a flight path without letting residents know, could they? For reference, we are in Maplewood, a few blocks away from the HS.

I'm often awakened by an extremely loud take-off sometime during those hours (closer to 2 or 3AM, I'd guess). Sounds like the thing will NEVER get off the ground. I've always assumed it was a cargo plane. VERY loud sucker.

So glad you noticed it too! I think they're cargo planes, and I don't think they have to adhere to the same requirements as passenger planes for takeoffs. Otherwise what would those of us who rely on FedEx do? There are usually a bunch that take off at 4:00 am. but the earlier ones have just started in maybe the past couple of months. And they don't seem to have a rhyme or reason.

Having been down this road before (why is it that we always manage to live within a flight path????) I can tell you that if you complain to the FAA or the Port Authority, they will most likely tell you that there has been no change in the flight patterns, you're just noticing it because your windows are open at night. During the winter and summer when the heat or AC is on, you're less likely to notice it. Yeah, right.

Sorry no help - just another frustrated sleeper.

This has been going on for a while. While I was pregnant, in my last trimester I couldn't sleep so I notice the air traffic patterns. There was a loud plane that flew at about 1:50 and there was another at about 3:50. The steady stream began at about 5:10 (which was usually when I nodded off)
