I've been pretty lax about the all the water main work being done all over town - ya gotta do what ya gotta do. But, I was just thinking about Halloween. Tons of parents and kids walking around in the dark and WHAM! falling flat on their faces tripping over the hoses that are linked from the pipes in the street to our outdoor spigots. You can't just unplug them - you'll have no water in your house. I just called NJ American to see if I could get an update on how long the project would go on -- thought maybe it would be cleared out a little by that time, but they don't even have an estimate of when it will be done. I asked who I could contact to express this concern and the rep told me she'll have someone get contact me about it, but if I don't hear back, I'll write a letter to HQ about my concern. Right now, of course, people can trip, but (a) the number of people walking through are minimal compared to what will come through on Halloween, and (b) a lot of people come to Maplewood from out of town to trick-or-treat, and they won't be as aware of this stuff lying around as we are.

I tripped over one of the hoses when out jogging last week. Guess it would've been nice to get a photo of me with my knees and hands bleeding |

See....even the folks at Yahoo are worried about it! Look at what's on their featured links... Coincidence? I think not...

They'd better get that work done before then ... if we have freezing temperatures with all of those temporary pipes/hoses around, it could be a nightmare. |

I walk around Maplewood and South Orange a lot, most often after dark, and I've seen plenty of the hoses you mention, but I fail to see the tripping hazard provided you stay on the sidewalk. Where in town are these lines going across walkways? |

Anyplace there is a temporary water hookup to the outside spigot. |

Trick or treaters aren't noted for staying on the sidewalk, actually. Especially the bigger ones who are out after dark. |

They are just about compeleted in the area they are working on now. There is a slight chance they will continue the project on the north side of Parker Ave. NJAWC has asked to have that section done also, but they have to get the Town's approval first. We have expressed the same concerns listed above along with some other concerns. We will meeting shortly to make a decision. Eric |

combustion - the hoses go across my walkway entrance, driveway and sidewalk. Maybe you don't see the hazard because it's dark out? Eric - Thank you for the update! Very much appreciated. |

This does pose an interesting liablility question, does it not? If there is an accident involving one of those hoses, is the homeowner responsible? They are difficult to see in the dark, and with kids running around, I am constantly afraid of someone tripping. |
