Not just a couple of little things either. Big black garbage bags full of carpet padding and who knows what else. Half of a huge wooden column. Sheetrock scraps, and we aren't even sheetrocking. Ceiling tiles. Sorry, that's just plain rude! And, in case you haven't noticed, it really, really ticks me off. Thinking of setting up a "nanny cam" for the dumpster. Anyone have one they're not using! Vent over. |

Hide behind the dumpster with a baseball bat. When the offenders next come by, jump out ninja style and scare the cr*p out of them. |

I know someone who had a similar problem recently and their dumpster was kept in a secured enclosure! This kind of thing happens. The high cost of dumping building materials has served to make it even more prevalent. Unfortunately, there is little the police can do unless you have some real evidence of who is doing the dumping. |

The illegal dumping is actually a criminal offense...theft of services. There were posts about this on New Jersey Law Network. They were from a guy whose kid was charged with dumping car trash in a dumpster and his kid's name & address were on a paper in the trash. For your purposes, are you billed by the ton or by the "pull?" If you feel you are being overcharged or inconvenienced because of this, request that the garbage company weld a eyehook and hinge onto the conainer. You can then put a lock on it and give the garbage company a key or combination. The company I work for has done this for some of our customers. It works. |

That's a drag. We didn't get a dumpster during our renovation. We piled stuff in a corner of the yard and the demo guy came by regularly during the project to haul the stuff away. We found all kinds of stuff dumped in our backyard, like worn car tires, etc. I would have loved to have caught the jerks. |

Brett, I did think of that, but I'm not all that crazy about the idea of going through the garbage. Plus, it looks like construction debris, so I don't think I'd expect to find anything with an address. Maybe I'll just lie in wait in the window looking down on it, and snap some pictures. Or maybe I'll just leave Buster tied up to it when I'm not around for the next couple of days. John, this is a big dumpster that comes in on the back of a truck. Don't think they make covers and locks for those. GT, the ba**s! To come in your back yard! |

At night we put a tarp over the dumpster we had and secured it with a gazillion bungee cords. The sheer number of the cords alone seemed to act as a deterrent.

Um am I missing something here? It's garbage. Who cares? It's gonna get to the same place wether it's in your garbage or theirs. |

Yes, you're missing the fact that we are paying to have this garbage removed--they are not! Further, the more garbage someone else puts in the dumpster we are paying for, the less we can fit, which could mean we might have to pay for another one! And as John Caffery says it is also apparently illegal and called "theft of services." But hey, if you don't care, maybe we'll just come to your house and put it in your garbage. It all goes to the same place, right? |

Meand, I was about to post the following when I saw what you wrote! Ah well I guess I'll say it again. Yes, you are missing something there. Besides the feeling of someone trespassing on your property, a knowledgeable poster had this to say:
Quote:The illegal dumping is actually a criminal offense...theft of services. There were posts about this on New Jersey Law Network. They were from a guy whose kid was charged with dumping car trash in a dumpster and his kid's name & address were on a paper in the trash.
Depending on how meand is billed, she or anyone would care if they're paying more than they would have for someone else's garbage. Perhaps you want to contact meand privately and let her know where you live so she can dump a spare door or bag with you. Oh and go check out your what to wear to a funeral thread. When I called James on his meanness in another thread, he is now trying to say he isn't mean on that thread. Too lame; too sick. |

Saw that Wendy. If he isn't mean, then I guess he's just plain stupid. Seems to be an abundance of new trolls here lately, eh. What's up with that? |

Well, if you have to get another dumpster because of the space they took up, then it's a problem, but otherwise it's not costing you any more(?). ...and if you really wanna put some of your trash in my trash can, then go for it. Ya know, since it DOES all go to the same place. |

This happened to us some years back and it's *very* annoying, in part because you don't realize it's happening until the illegally dumped material shows up over the side of the dumpster - at which point you really get concerned about the cost of ordering another one. I have no problem with neighbors taking advantage of the dumpster if they ask first, but dumping several cubic yards of someone else's construction debris is theft, pure and simple.

Not that anyone asked for a treatise on the economics of garbage but I don't have to get up until 9 tomorrow and so I have plenty of time tonight so here goes. Garbage is billed to the generator (which is you) in two ways; by volume as measured by the size of the container times the number of times it is emptied ("per pull") or by the weight of the refuse. The trash is then taken to a transfer station or an incinerator. At that location, the garbage man is billed by that facility based on the weight of the refuse being dumped. Therefore, even if a homeowner did not incur extra costs because of illegal dumping, the trash hauler did. Meand.. might benefit by calling the trash hauler and asking if they have a way to secure the roll-off container. They may have tarps and bungees or ropes to supply since this practice may reduce their profits. Now this brings us to the question of how this affects the rest of us who are not improving our homes. Ya see, some of the more enlightened trash haulers have installed scales on their trucks to weigh the garbage collected from each house or business. Their customers are being billed based on the weight of their trash. The good news about the use of scales on the trucks is that it will increase the rate of recycling if it spreads. In particular, it may increase the practice of residential composting since wet garbage is the heaviest part of most household garbage. As I mentioned earlier, I work in the recycling end of the garbage industry and the good news is that business is always picking up. |
