I called the Fire Dept. this morning, and they confirmed that a child had died in a fire a couple of days ago. They would not give me any details of the incident. Who knows what happened?

There was an article here a day or so ago, but I believe Dave pulled it because of some inappropriate postings that followed. There is a brief mention in the Education section on MOL, but there was a large article on p.17 (the front page of the 2nd section of the paper) in Thursdays Star Ledger.

There is a link to a Star Ledger article in the Official Maplewood section along with, more importantly, a message from Mayor DeLuca about how to help the family.

Out of respect for the child's family I think the MOL community isn't posting on this subject other than to offer prayers and condolences to the family and to wish Officer Williams a speedy and full recovery.

The info about donations, and an article on the tragedy, are here: http://www.southorangevillage.com/cgi-bin/show.cgi?tpc=3132&post=183051#POST1830 51

Chris, the boy who died was a very sweet little boy and the family have apparently lost everything, so I am sure any help will be appreciated.

There is a follow up in today's S-L. Sounds like Officer Williams is going to be okay.

:'( SO SO SO SO HORRIBLE.
I was in school and I heard about this through a friend. I am friendly with a couple of the McPhatters... but from high school, so not so recently.

From what I hear, they need clothing. I'm sure money always helps of course.
UGh. So horrible, so sad.

Does anybody know any specifics regarding clothing sizes? My husband and I have several coats I was going to donate to the MPD, I could instead give it to the family.

Mae is 13 and wears about a 7-8 shoe and is about a size 8. There is also a 5-year-old boy."

In regards to the posts about the child's being in the basement --
I don't like the accusitory way it was asked, as though it was negligence that hurt the child --
However, can't people raise questions? Yes, maybe it should have been done in a forum like, the police station.. because you can't already assume that the police have asked that question. But maybe the person who asked didn't know where to call -- and isn't this an online forum for our town? I refer you to the case of Kitty Genovese, who was beaten on her way home from work and was able to drag herself into the middle of a busy street, where neighbors hear her cries but did nothing. When questioned by the police as to why no one called, most of them had the same answer -- They assumed someone else already had taken care of it.

We always need to speak up, and although the accusitory fashion the question seemed to be asked in wasn't appropriate, and I would hope the family didn't see it, and maybe this isn't even the best question to make a point on... This is the umteenth time I've seen people jump down someone's throat on MOL and people should be able to ask questions and speak their mind. I learned that when I was very little, I hope some of you will learn it too.

flugermongers:

The why questions need to be asked but there is an appropriate time and venue for them. Because our bricks and mortar and virtual communities overlap so very much and because most everything that gets written on this board remains forever in the attic there is much concern about posts on this topic which might be read in the wrong way by members of the family or their close friends further magnifying their grief.

The community is a state of mourning over the loss of this child and it seems tasteless to ask questions of blame and responsibility so openly just now.

I understand that the post wasn't very tactful.. and I even know some of the Mcphatters and wouldn't want them to have read that. I agree with you, but I do think questions need to be raised, and that if someone's throat is jumped down, they might be less likely to inquire next time... which would be sad. Ya know what I'm sayin, Joan?

Perhaps Joan is unaware that a midday Christmas post to this thread was deleted. Flugermonger responded to that.

My heart goes out to the McPhatters, and I ask that all online citizens respect their privacy in their grief.

They need financial help above all -- see the Official Maplewood thread... http://www.southorangevillage.com/cgi-bin/show.cgi?tpc=3132&post=183051#POST1830 51

Tom--
I meant that sometimes, maybe not in this particular case, but sometimes, even when it's not tactful, something does need to be said.

flugermongers, then I suppose in that case, the person takes a risk in posting. Maybe it would be called a necessary evil, and he'd have to take his lumps, even though he had good intentions.

Again my point was that everyone jumped down his/her throat. And that shouldn't happen like that. Meh. Why are you "the prissy pants"? Or should I know this?

They should, although they shouldn't do it rudely.

I'm called Prissy Pants because I posted some rude mysogynist jokes which were out of character for me. Lizziecat said she had, up until then, thought of me as a prissy pants but felt that the jokes showed me to be angry and hostile. So I took the name, because I'd rather be a prissy pants than angry and hostile towards women.

Well of course, other people should be allowed to voice their opposition, but not in a way that's going to inhibit the vocalization in the first place. Not that they should, but they should be able to.

Hm, well I'm glad to know you're a prissy pants as opposed to a misogynist. The latter is a terrible thing.

Tom and co.

Show some damn respect for the tragedy and the family. This thread isn't the place for where you're going.

We're jumping down Tom & co's throat now? Ah well, it's true that this thread is titled "Fire Results In Death Of A Child" -- we could move our freedom of speech discussion elsewhere since we are off topic, but I think it's pretty much done. But threads lead to other things too. And this thread led to that, and now someone else is telling us to shut up.. meh. I'm finished here. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy.

You know, I was thinking about it, and you guys are right. This isn't the time or place for a question like that. I suppose I was just raising that question because I'd seen stuff like that before, and it bothered me.

I apologize
