If you're willing to drive, check out Marcello's in Berkeley Heights. He has a wood burning oven and makes a mean garlic pizza. I swear, there's a head of garlic on a small pie. Good table service, too.

How can you say Roman Gourmet isn't kid-friendly? I would vote it the most kid friendly place in Maplewood. It's the only reason I go there - the pizza is ok but the place is full of kids for a reason.

Oh Stromboli. I'm having flashbacks. I took my future wife there numerous times when we were in college and didn't have much money. I vote for Trattoria in the Village and Pizza Primo on Springfield. They are both very friendly and accomodating. Trattoria wins hands down in terms of quality and variety of food in the Village. Pete and his family at Pizza Primo are extremely friendly and always ask me about the family. Again as mentioned Roman Gourmet loses for not hosting parties.

I shall have this entire topic printed, framed and placed above my fireplace to remind myself of the failure of our educational system.

All the talk months ago about Papa John moving in and threatening to steal business from the highly-recommended Pizza Primo, got me to try Pizza Primo for the first time, and now I go there once a week. Great pizza.

I didn't say Roman Gourmet was not kid friendly but not friendly to kids B-day parties. Trattoria is, therefore when I'm in town, they get my biz.

Is there any town ordinance stating that a takeout buisness cannot stay opened until 2 am.This concerns me especially on SA.Where safety might play as a big issue.

 Ittap,

Wouldn't you think it's desirable for there to be activity, even from one store on a major thoroughfare?

You're worried that safety would be a big issue... to whom? Could you elaborate on that line of thought?

Roman Gourmet rocks. We go once a week, my kids love it, (3 and 1.5 years old). I always get good service and great food. I will tell you that some customers can be rude, but not the owners.

 Ittap2001:

Why would you be concerned about the safety of the employees?

One of the nice things about bringing more pedestrian traffic and more residents to SA is that the area becomes safer because more people are around. The later the businesses on SA are open, the safer the area will become at night. If the owners of Popa John's have determined that there is sufficient demand for pizza late at night, they should be able to stay open to meet this need.

I vote for Maplewood Pizzaria on Valley Street. Their Pizza is wonderful and they also deliver. However, if the choice comes down to Papa John's of Pizza Primo, I'll go with Primo every time!

Since I am big on presentation and bit OCD.

IMO, Pete Primo needs to fix his place up a bit. I went there the other day and the shop is not looking too good. The Pizza may be good but the decor leaves much much to be desired.

Heck the nail and hair emporiums on SA stay open until midnight, why should a pizza place be any different?

Personally, I am tired of most local pizza, which I find soggy. To my mind you should be able to pick up a slice without it buckling and the topping falling off.

While a little bit of a drive, about 1,500 miles round trip,I suggest the thin crust pizza at The Florian on 57th Street near the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.

I tried Poppa Johns, It tasted exactly like some Pizza I had in Holland around 20 years ago. It can be described as cardboard with a thin dusting of tomato sauce and a hint of tasteless cheese. Do yourself a favor, cross the street and get real pizza.

I love the pizza from Maplewood Pizza. They don't skimp on the cheese, and that's key. After reading this thread, my fiancee and I tried Pizza Primo, and we thought it was fine, but not exceptional.

I always manage to get the front door open before the guy from Maplewood Pizza has even rung the doorbell. In light of this, I hereby nominate myself for the No-Bell Pizza Prize.
