The Dow is up over 10,000. Productivity is up, yet Democrats are still whining about the economy. Desperation is an ugly thing.

The Dow is only a partial measure of the economy and not the best. More significant is unemployment, which remains way too high. This shows that are manufacturing is in the toilet and that we slowly stripping America of its consumers.

Why should the fact that our economy is showing wonderful, positive and dramatic signs of improvement, (which is thought by many to be a direct result of policies brought forth and transacted by the Republican party in power) make you unhappy Duncan?

Why be humble during an election campaign? And don't fool yourself, the campaign has begun. Credit must be taken for successes brought about by key initiatives implemented. You are always poised and ready to point to the failures, so why not the successes? Are you that partisan? Gee, I guess so.

I am not gloating. I am presenting facts. You want gloating, let's see what we can do for you.

Yet, we continue to see numerous Democrats whine about the economy. They continue to say that its a "jobless recovery" and stuff like that. Can you not give credit where credit is due? Why reach to faind fault with the messenger? Is it because you cannot find fault with the messege? The truth?

Chucky.. who ever said it made me unhappy. Reading comprehension is lacking this morning.
The gloating is what I took issue with. I am thrilled that there is some economic improvement, but I also know that touting the creation of 150K jobs is bunk.. Cause that many jobs are created by people coming of age into the work force. For real improvement in the job situation look for 300K.
Sheesh.

I dont care if the president is Republican or Democrat, so long as the economy is back on its feet. Anybody see this article from today's AP : "GDP Roars Ahead at 8.2 Percent in Q3". Happy Holidays, indeed!

Actually Unemployment (at just 5.9% which is very low and is falling) is FAR FAR less significant than GDP, Personal income, Corporate profit, Inventory levels, and retail spending. All of which are doing INCREDIBLY well. GDP growth at 8.2% for last quarter is almost unheard of.

The economy is flying. Argue with Bush's policies all you want, but the economy is undeniably good.

"The U.S. economy, propelled by tax cuts and low interest rates, roared ahead at an 8.2 percent annual rate in the third quarter, the best showing in nearly 20 years, while Americans' incomes and spending both showed healthy gains in November"

Sounds positive to me.

Michael Janay, unemployment is significant if you're unemployed or underemployed. I've heard that the jobs will follow this reported increase in output. If this ends up being true, I'll be very happy.

Chuck, you're quite right that it's impossible to know if it's the government's policies that affect the economy (up or down) or just cycles. Whether you give credit or blame depends a lot on which side you butter your toast on.

Tom,

When discussing the economy we are talking about a macroeconomic view. Even when the economy was booming in 99-2000, the unemployment rate was still 4%. It will NEVER be 0. Today, unemployment is at 5.9% and dropping. The lowest it has been in the last 30 years is 4.0% in 2000. Thats a change of 1.9% from the 40 year low (which was an anomoly due to the tech boom). The Average unemployment rate during the 90's was 5.75% a 0.15% difference from today.

To put this in to perspective, Germany and France's rate is 9.4%

Michael, I agree with your post of 2:44pm. A macroscopic view is useful, and 5.9% sounds good. Lower than 5% has bad effects.

But there are other things to look at. What jobs are being created? What jobs are going away? What is the nature of underemployment?

Are there readily available answers to these questions?

So, then precisely what might President Bush have to accomplish in order to obtain your vote Duncan?

And, please try to be honest and reasonable with your expectations.

Ah you presume that I am a liar. How nice of you.
Frankly there is little that Bush could do to garner my vote. I disagree with him and his approach to policy on many many levels. Not the least of which is the deep sense of betrayal at being fed a constant stream of lies to back a military operation, that while successful and one that I am ultimately happy with the outcome TO THIS POINT, was launched on a lie. His constant posing with people and programs only to gut them almost immediately (i.e. teach for america) just goes against my grain. I don't belive the guy when he speaks. The best speech he gave was the one on Sunday after Saddam had been captured. But just about every other time I hear him he polarizes the population. I have quoted this before and will take heat for it again I am sure but what GWB and his gang are doing is spreading fear..

quote:

He is interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections.
You gather a group, of middle-age, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family, and American values, and character, and then you wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism and you tell them that she's to blame for their lot in life, and then you go on television, and you call her a whore.

with the obvious exception of the girfriend reference, this is what I feel is going on.

And really as a whole I can laud him for his successes (I, too was very glad to have him as president on September 12 2001) but I seriously take issue with his agenda. And frankly with the tone of most of his supporters, like yourself, who are have no patience for anyone who doesnt agree with them and make that known in usually incendiary, condescending discourse

Employment gains lag most other economic indicators. Cap Ex spending will increase in 2004 and that will cause employment gains. Consumer spending is responsible for most of the 2nd and 3rd quarter improvements and that will level off as business begin to spend, and that will include increased headcount,

How will American manufacturing ever get out of the toilet when Americans only want to buy cheap products that can't be manufactured here because all Americans want to earn too much money to manufacture them???

And how will the unemployment rate ever be accurate when most of those cheap products are sold at places like Wal-Mart that employ almost all the people on the planet, the majority of which the majority qualify for food stamps???

How can it ever get any better??? Nobody wants to do that work yet everybody wants inexpensive things??? I mean, if people don't even want to rake their own leaves in this town, how can you expect them to want to do slave labor so they can sit on some particle board furniture at a good price???

Llama Recipe Of The Month:

The Other, Other Burger - seasoned llama delivers a fresh taste for burgers!

1 pound ground llama
1 teaspoon pepper
1 case Yakima Honey Weis beer

Divide llama into two parts and shape into patties about 2 inches thick, handling meat as much as possible. Sprinkle both sides of patties with seasoned pepper and then dunk in 1 can of beer that you already put in a bowl. Grill over direct heat over hot fire 20 minutes per side, or until charred. Serve right away on buns with favorite condiments and glasses of beer.
