I've been having intermittent phone problems the last week or so. Lots of pickups with nothing on the other end and static on one of the lines. I blew off the silent calls as incompetent telemarketing systems, but I've heard from a couple other people in Maplewood who are having phone problems the last week or two. One is not getting a ring when you call them, the other is getting cross-talk.

Anybody else having problems recently, and does anyone know if something's up?

Had some trouble about a week ago. Verizon came out and fixed it. Same type of thing: brief rings with no one on line, line noise and then phone not ringing when it should. Wasn't quite clear on what they did to fix it other than reconnect wiring between outside box and box in basement.

We had the same thing a couple of months ago. Verizon came out and replaced the line into the house and there have been no problems since.

We're infamous around here for old wiring. When it's really wet outside, the moisture affects phone service. Verizon replaces the lines as needed.

The last Verizon tech that came and fixed our phone lines made it sound, as if they only do the minimum that they have to do. He said it will only be a matter of time for it to go out again. Our service went out about 4 times in the 2.5 years that we are in town. It always takes them about 2-3 days to fix it. Luckily I have a second line using the internet (Vonage).

I had a phone problem a few years ago.
When I picked up my phone to make a call I could hear my neighbors conversation on her phone. She was making dinner plans for that evening. I went over and rang her door bell and asked if I could join her.

Barbara,
Are we neighbors? The day we moved into our place a couple of years ago, I plugged the phone into one of the jacks in the bedroom -- there are four of them in there, God knows why -- and heard a conversation on the other end. Bizarre!

It happened to me on Oakview, it happened to a friend on Tuscan.

Shouldn't there be a federal investigation?

Gozerbrown, you have four jacks, seems like a good place for the feds to start.

Aah...We live in South Orange. We never did anything about it, I'm ashamed to say. Our bill is always fine and have not had any problems so we let it go. And we never plugged anything into those jacks again!
