UPDATED: 11:30 AM EST December 29, 2003

UNION TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A car struck a pole and then went into a house early Monday, killing three people inside the vehicle.

3 Killed As Car Slams Into House

While it did not appear that anyone inside the home was injured, its residents were evacuated because the accident caused a natural gas leak that was later repaired by Public Service Electric & Gas, officials said.

The names of those killed were not immediately available, and details about the accident remained sketchy. Authorities said the driver apparently lost control of the car around 1 a.m when he tried to make a turn in the area of Springfield and Millburn avenues.

Two men inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, while another died a short time later at a nearby hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Union Township authorities.

I heard helicopters this morning, so i watched the 6am news to see what they said. I've never seen a car so flattened against the side of a building. It was pretty horrifying.

Deadly Car Accident In Union Township, NJ

By Ken Rosato
(Union Township-WABC, December 29, 2003) — Three people were killed overnight when their car slammed into a house in New Jersey.

From the AP: Interactives Reports

Early this morning, police had just left the scene and only one cars remains.

This started around 1:00 a.m., when police say a gold Honda with Colorado license plates was traveling a at a high rate of speed around Milburn Avenue in Union Township. Police are measuring the skid marks caused by the car on the street at 257 feet.

The driver apparently lost control of the car and crashed into a pole, slamming into a house. All three people in the car were killed. There was nothing left of the car but a scorched ball of metal.

No one in the house was hurt, but the residents had to be evacuated because the accident caused a gas leak. Word is that some people did see the car driving around town yesterday evening but no one knows who the people were and why they were in town.

A look at the license plate shows the car was not stolen. Police are continuing their investigation.
