http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20031230131909990008&_ccc=1 Why did Ashcroft wait until now to recuse himself, after months of internal investigations and Justice Department intervention? Why did he give it to the US Attorney in Chicago--is this supposed to give it a patina of being "outside the beltway"? Seems like Karl Rove figured this may become a real political hot potato in 2004. But a US Attorney in Chicago is still beholden to the Justice Department for his career. Wouldn't it have been better to appoint an outside counsel? Oh yeah, that died after Starr fried Clinton. Anyhow, seems like this will be an interesting issue on the campaign trail. |

There seem to be two theoires about what is going on. One is the one you posit, the other is that they have found something and its all about to hit the fan. Only time will tell. While an outside counsel would be better this guy in Chicago sounds pretty independant, at least from the Times this AM. (I actually think most of the career justice people, are likely to go after criminal conduct if they find it.) |

1-2 many -- maybe Janet Reno could answer that question best.
