(sigh)
of course this thread had to become a tired rehash of the reval. and another gripe-fest about taxes.

But here's my bottom line. In the 8+ years I've lived in Maplewood, things have improved in so many ways. Vic & Jerry's tenures roughly coincided with that time frame. Were they solely responsible for the good things that have gone on? No, but they were certainly two of the people whose efforts led to those good things, so here's another thanks to both of them.

Thanks, Cathy.

I'm always here. It's just rare that one can actually add anything new.

In a town that's chock full of talented and energetic volunteers, Jerry and Vic have been (and with any luck, will continue to be) two of our finest.

The work is not nearly done. Tough decisions still have to be made. For all our sakes, we have to hope that the new guys (and gal) get the support they need to do what is right for the town.

I'm hopeful.

As stated ad nauseum by me, no one will ever convince me it was fair for my taxes in the middle of Maplewood to go from 12K to almost 20K.

The town is flooded with many who were not here during the reval, so it is hard for them to comprehend the lasting anger of many who made that journey.

Also the many many adjustments which were made to quell those neighborhood groups with the loudest voices shifted the burden unfairly.

It presently (obviously this figure is set to go up) costs me almost $1,700 a month to live here!

Since it was mentioned at yesterday's TC meeting that 60 percent of our budget goes to the schools, that is certainly a place to start looking where we can save. Every year this portion of our tax dollar goes up and the apparent quality of instruction goes down. Go figure.

As a little bit of a thread drift, may I ask where Vic was yesterday? There was no mention of his being sick or out of the country. His absence was very pointed. Jerry had the sense to make an appearance and gave some nice remarks.

It was noted that the $1M bond issue for the police station was voted down on 12/31. I recall the finance officer I think saying a couple of meetings ago that it was important financially for this bond issue to be passed this year, What happened?

Continuing the drift, when did a military police presence replace the scouts for the flag ceremony? We are a nation at war, but I found their performance at the beginning and end of the meeting chilling. The 8 or 10 police officers standing along the wall throughout the meeting were sending a message to the new TC. How can we afford to build an $8M police station?

I guess I should have made it clear that I was not limiting my suggestion that we stop talking about the Reval and move on just to me and Straw. I've had my say about it, over and over, and I am now willing to stop.

Copihue: The Joint Meeting is the Sewer Authority for a number of Towns in Essex and Union Counties. The rep from each Town actually gets a salary for being on the Joint Meeting, so it is a "plum". Mayor Grasmere was the Chairman of the Joint Meeting for many years and became an expert on the disposal of sewerage.

Do you think that they are buttering him up so that he will be more agreeable during the TC meetings, anon? Vic is clear: he will be running again. Do you think that David will support him if he does?

"Buttering him up"? I'd like to think that they are just trying to unify for the benefit of the Town.

I've learned that the best way to improve one's reputation, is to have Strawberry say something nasty about you.

I'd love to see a campaign piece that says "I am supported by (or opposed by)Wharfrat, Nohero, Lseltzer and Curmugeon".

Ninety percent of the voters would conclude that the candidate was nuts!

Wharfrat,

I'll have to remind you that the voting record of private citizens is none of your business. Failure to understand the nature of your offense could result in a record of your salary as a Livingston, N.J. teacher made public.

You are such an asshat. There are a lot of other message boards that would find you funny, can't you post on one of those?

I guess not because they're too smart for you.

Call it a personal attack I could care less. Anyone who posts at 11:58 on New Years Eve needs a life anyway.

Whether a person is registered to vote or not or whether he or she has voted in a specific election is a matter of public record as is any public school teacher's salary.

Whoa, this thread has taken an interesting turn!

Straw, an individual's voter registration is a matter of public record. We're all in the books down at the Essex County Registrar (well, maybe practically all of us). Anybody can walk in and find out an individual's declared party, and which primary and general election that person voted in.

Folks may recall the discussion here about one of the candidates in the 2002 primary, and whether she had registered as a Democrat. Someone actually provided a copy of her registration form here on MOL. That was a public document, as is whether Straw or anybody else is registered to vote.

Does every thread have to turn into a discussion of Straw?

Perhaps from now on when a thread takes that turn, Dave should shut it down. Better still, the rest of us should just restrain ourselves from playing into that nonsense.

The fact that Straw put Alg in his top 25 for digging the big Straw was pretty much a dead giveaway, but now it's totally confirmed.
