It causes more premature deaths in NJ than alcohol. More than drugs. More than reckless driving. What is it?

Air pollution.

If you don't think that pollution in the air that you and your family breathe is a real and significant problem, think again. Please read the attached message from NJPIRG, and take a minute to support the passage the of the Clean Cars Act.

_________________________________________________

The Clean Cars Act would reduce smog pollution by 19% by the year 2020 by requiring that 10% of new cars be cleaner, starting in 2006. This is the equivalent of taking 500,000 cars off the road, and, as a result, New Jersey will see drastic reductions to our severe air pollution problems and the associated health risks.

It is determined that each year between 2,300 and 5,400 New Jersey residents die prematurely because of air pollution. This finding ranks air pollution as the third highest risk factor for premature death, behind smoking and obesity, and just slightly above alcohol.

Please take a moment to ask your state assemblymember to support the Clean Cars Act when it comes up for a vote. Then, ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this e-mail to them.

"It causes more premature deaths in NJ than alcohol. More than drugs. More than reckless driving. What is it?"

And I thought the answer was MOL Soapbox when Strawberry, Nohero, Duncan, Uke, et al get going. Different kind of air pollution, I guess.
