We tipped the garbage guys and the mailman today, but my wife saw the UPS guy come up and now she feels guilty about not leaving a tip for him. She really likes him, but we don't see him THAT often.

To tip or not to tip? And how much?

No, and I'm amused by the little holiday card he sends soliciting tips. We don't get that many packages!

Our UPS guy sent a card too! I will tip him - did almost all my shopping online this year.

Not sure how to tip the trash guys, as they are here long before I wake up...

How to tip the sanitation folk: You tape an envelope to the top of the trash lid and write VERY CLEARLY so he won't miss it

I was going to tip my UPS guy until today.

I had a package arriving which required a signature. We called to ask that it be delivered after 5 pm (it says on the slip it is a possibility). THe next day he again tries to deliver at 12 noon. When we call to ask what's up, we're told he is too busy so unless we want to have it shipped back to the sender (it is a xmas gift) we need to go to Newark and wait in line to pick up our package between 8 pm and 9 pm. I stood in line in 22 degree weather for 35 minutes before making inside the facility where I waited another 30 minutes to be helped - I was lucky as I was number 16 in a line of well over 30 people. My UPS guy just lost his tip forever.

I always put lots of very shiny curling ribbon on the garbage collector's tip envelope and also write in bold letters, etc.

Cagey: Not only will our UPS guy not be getting a tip...we will never be using UPS again...after what happened to us yesterday.

Two packages
Both SIGNED slips clearly on the door along with a huge note to ring the super's bell for any new packages.
Got home last night and slips and note still on door. (assume UPS hasn't come yet)
Take down slips and note, go upstairs to track packages via website. Tracking says they haven't been to our building yet.
7:00pm comes and still no UPS guy
Go online to track again and lo and behold...the status has changed to "exception" and atates that the packages were requested to be returned to sender and are on their way BACK to Minnesota.
Call UPS...after 3 hours we find out that a neighbor in the building (a JESPY client) decided since she was at the door at the time the UPS guy came in she would tell him she didn't want one of them and to send it back but the other one she wanted to send to the JESPY house for the counselors. UPS agrees to do this for her (she is not the addressee, does not have a last name even SIMILAR to ours and is OBVIOUSLY mentally challenged), they took her name and number and went along with their business.
when asked how/why the driver can allow someone other than the addressees or sender to change the status of a package (especially when the signed slips were there in front of his face to leave the packages), UPS said "oops driver's error, maybe we can stop them before they get back to MN."
After 3 hours on the phone with 5 different UPS Customer service reps (hung up on by a supervisor when we asked to make a formal complaint) we finally were told we would get a phone call this morning....we'll see what happens...but it's unbelievable they would allow just anyone to SEND THE PACKAGES BACK TO THE SENDER!!!!!!!! has this ever happened to anyone else before and is this illegal???? it seems like it might have been or there are some legal questions there....

I'd call Lynn at Jespy and inform her of the situation. This is totally unexceptable and they need to speak with this client. I'd also be annoyed at UPS. Is it possible though it wasn't your regular driver and the driver thought the Jespy person had the authority to make this decision?

You should have left the slips on the door. It is clearly your OWN fault.

CFA: Please re-read the post...I clearly stated that I left "Both SIGNED slips clearly on the door along with a huge note to ring the super's bell for any new packages." There was no fault but on the UPS driver.

On Friday, same delivery guy delivered ALL packages for our apartment building to the building next door (left them outside the security door...didn't ring the bells and left them where anyone could take them) We happened to be outside at the time the UPS van pulled up and decided to wait for them to come over (since the previous fiasco left us a little apprehensive)...we ended up having to flag him down and ask if he had any packages for our building when he didn't come over. His reply was "oh i thought this building was ___. Sorry. This is only my 5th day on the job and it'll probably be my last." He didn't even know how to work the signature thing for me to sign when we did get our packages. We had 3 huge boxes dropped off next door as well as 3 other tenants' 4 other boxes. I understand the "holiday rush" but there really is no excuse for it.
