We stayed home this year and were really disapointed with the coverage of the ball drop in Times Square. Too much chatter, wayyy to much Mariah Carey and not enough of the event itself. On the other channel was Regis chattering away. Ad yes, it was very sad to listen to Dick Clark after his stroke. Anyone else feel gypped by not getting to see more of the ball actually dropping?? |

Dick Clark - sad or inspiring? That's been a big debate we've been having over the weekend. On the one hand, he's supposedly made amazing progress since last year, which would be inspiring. However, he's a far cry from what we remember of him the last time we saw him, which was sad. Discuss. |

I didn't feel jipped, I just couldn't understand what in the world Mariah Carey was thinking wearing that out fit. |

I agree. On Fox 5, they brought a cadaver back to life as the host. The coverage seemed to be about the host and not what was happening in Times Square. |

What exactly should they be showing instead of the host and the musical performers? A bunch of idiots standing in the cold for six hours yelling 'woo!' every 30 seconds? Sounds fascinating. |

I was without the appropriate male companionship and had nothing to do on NYE, but even in my desparate state I knew that only losers go to NYC just to watch a large object get lowered on a crane. God help those who watch that on TV. You guys are even more loserish than I am, and that says a lot. |

Tookie - based on your posts in the last few days, it occurs to me that you measure your self worth by whether or not you have a man in your life. Are you a Cato/Ravenheart reincarnation? If not, you may consider that this is more of a problem than your self-professed weight issue. So - back on topic - we had an amazing dinner with our closest, dearest friends, all plopped down to watch movies in front of the fire and did, indeed, open champaigne and flip channels to watch coverage from 11:45 to 12:05. You know, the kind of "Loserdom" that I cherish more than anything in the world. Carson and Wanda were great (Wanda is always a scream), Dick was sad but I think that he was trying to prove something to himself; maybe doing the show was his goal for getting better. the accidental shot of him stuck in the blonde's throat at midnight was priceless. Mariah Carey - oy. Obviously, no one explained to her that when One Gets Implants the Size of Watermelons that One Should Buy Larger Clothes. Regis. Regis? I just don't understand Regis. The amount of Chapstick he must go thru kissing Donald Trump's ! But, Regis could be a whole 'nuther thread in and of himself. He is as mystifying as Paris Hilton. Word association: Regis Philbin = Why? |

Mariah's comeback is amazing. People adore her. I predict she'll remain a major star, on the order of Barbra Streisand. |

No argument there. She has an amazing talent and is quite beautiful. This is what makes her current appearance (IMHO) so sad. If I were her, I'd fire my stylist immediately. The only things I've heard/read about her NYE performance are her ridiculous outfits. Nothing about her music. |

Is "comeback" a euphemism for "chest"? If Derek Jeter saw fit to dump her a number of years ago, that's good enough for me. |

I am so happy for her. Can you imagine how triumphant she feels, and how she is showing Tommy Mottola she can do it without him? She's not tasteful and elegant in her appearance. So what. Fashion these days is nauseating sameness anyway. Any two bit starlet can hire the stylist of the moment to make her a clone of Kate Moss or whoever is the current style icon. Nobody looks like Mariah! |

I like Mariah, she tries so hard. She went through her "kept woman" phase with Mottola, she had her breakdowns, she got fat, she got thin, she got normal. She has her "lambs", she definitely can belt 'em out with the best of them. If Mimi wants to wear a tea cozy to New Years' Rockin' Eve, well, who are we to judge? |

What really got me anoyed with Mariah, besides the sleaze factor, was that I don't think she was singing-looked fake (dare I say like her boobs?) Well, there are certain traditions I like, and yes the ball drop is one of them. Especially this year, since the ball was really spiffed up. Last year we got to see who pressed the button-Colin Powel. This year I hardly saw Bloomberg! If we stay home next year , then I will look for better coverage. Not that I don't apprecaite the entertainment, last year there was Sheryl Crow and she sounded great. (and Mr. Tabby thought she was hot. He fell asleep while Mariah was on! ) Oh well, I guess we all have our own preferences. And before I forget, here's a nostalgic note: My grandma went to Times Square in 1922 with her boyfriend at the time, for New Year's Eve. She said it was such fun and very safe. |

I went in 1976 or so. It was about 15F degrees and very windy. We had fun anyway. I suggest you go at least once.

The oddest coverage (Mimi's dress notwithstanding) was Fox News. In addition to some bizarre and quasi-sexual bantering between the hosts: a beautiful young woman and a much older man who'd been facelifted within an inch of his life. They had just about the stupidest guy ever interviewing the revellers. Maybe it is hard to make conversation with those folks but one bystander from Alabama actually felt sorry for him tried to help him from looking so dumb. It went something like this: Journalist (snicker): Hey, we've got people from all over here tonight. Where are you from? Person: Pennsylvania J: Where are you from? Other Person: Pennsylvania, too. J: And you, where are you from? Another Person: Alabama J: Wow! Alabama! How about the smoking? AP: (still smiling but confused)Do you mean the snowing? It's stopped snowing now so I don't mind it so much. J: The smoking! They're not letting anyone smoke or drink here in Times Square this year. No smoking and no drinking. What do you think about that? AP: That's okay. There's someone here (motions behind her) from Italy would you like to talk to them? J: (to camera) That's right folks. No smoking and no drinking in Times Square this year but people are still having a great time. Back to you . . . Or my personal favorite -- not sure which channel: Journalist: Just a four more minutes now. How long have you been waiting? Person: Five hours! (Jumping) I really have to go to the bathroom. J: Well, you better hold it! Genius.

Coochie coochie coochie! Mariah's costumes are very Bob Mackie. I want to see her in a big headress. |
