“...Wireless communication systems are growing in popularity, too -- with many new cars now offering hands-free integrated cell phones and some form of wireless communication technology such as Bluetooth. It's a near-certainty that drivers will soon be able to access their e-mails and even surf the Net while in their cars using technology built right into the vehicle.” AOL Welcome Screen, 1/3/05

OK, people, the security issues aside (way back when, if you had assembled a committee of crooks and asked them how the world of technology might make their jobs easier, they would surely have said, “Give us the Internet!”), when is this insane obsession with being wired up 24/7 going to run its course? The only thing you should be doing when driving is driving. You don’t need to be surfing the internet, reading your silly email or yakking nonsense into your cell phone. Focus and watch the road; nothing else.

And GPS devices – dangerous, useless gimmickry. The safest, most efficient way to navigate the roads is – surprise, surprise -- low tech. Ligeti pulls over, consults his exhaustive library of folding AAA maps, and re-enters traffic only when he knows where he’s going. He arrives quicker at his destination than individuals enslaved to these distracting and often inaccurate gadgets.

Reject the digital lifestyle in 2006.

Might want to start getting your "news" from somewhere other than the AOL Welcome Screen.

Sorry to interrupt your rant. Carry on.

Good lord, I think, for the first time ever, I agree with Libertarian. I was definately born at the wrong time. Wrong century methinks.

I'm sure that accessing email while driving is no more distracting than sipping a cup of coffee.

I agree that surfing the Net while driving is ridiculous, but GPS systems are great. My parents, both in their 70s, have one, and it has revolutionized their approach to driving. No more scrutinizing maps with tiny print -- hard on older eyes -- and no more driving around baffled, also hard on older people. Their GPS lady tells them exactly where to go, and how could she distract them when she simply speaks the directions out loud? GPS is one of the best things to ever happen to driving!

One of these devices once instructed me to make a U-turn inside the Sumner Tunnel.

I'm sure it was the device's fault, not yours.
