Oh goody. Always glad to help. I'm learning that it's always best to slip through these awkward situations with a smile on your face. Sometimes the smile stays, too! |

sorry ess, that was my nanny calling. my wife was piloting a United 757 across country yesterday afternoon, and I was in the middle of performing an 8-hour open heart surgery. and the nanny had been hit by a bus and broke both legs. with her last bit of strength she managed to get the class list out of her purse, and before passing out, called the first number she spotted on the list - yours. so sorry. our bad. |

And since no one picked up the kid, the teachers would turn out the lights and close up the building, leaving the poor kid there, shivering and alone until morning. |

Apology accepted. Btw, seems that the mom and I are playing phone tag. I get the sense that she doesn't know what transpired. |

A bigger problem for me is wondering if the school would have even released the child to you. If so, I have a MAJOR problem with this considering from what you've told us, the chances are you are not on the child's list as someone allowed to pick the child up. And if it's the school I think it is I seriously doubt any child would be released to someone not on the list that easily. Meaning the parent would have to call the school and explain why it needed to be done. Is "J" the director? |

At least the Nanny placed the call herself rather than having her secretary do it. I hate when that happens. |

I'm a little late to this debate but I find it interesting that most people believe that the nanny DID call the parents first and that they punted back to her. Maybe the nanny had an emergency of her own and didn't want to tell the parents that she couldn't get to the school on time so she took matters into her own hands?? Ess, did you ever call the parents? They need to know what their nanny is up to. |

I wouldn't be angry that the Nanny phoned but I would be concerned for the well being of the child. I would call the parents and say I was just checking to make sure junior got home safely the other day since their Nanny had called and asked me to pick up junior after school and I had explained that I couldn't do this because my child is in the after school program since I get home late from work every day. This would be a neutral way of telling the parents that the Nanny made the call and would get across the message that you are unfortunately unavailable to pick up their child after school should such a situation arise again. It is likely that the Nanny called you either because you live relatively near the child in question so you wouldn't have been going much out of your way to drop off the child and/or because your children are friends at school and the Nanny frequently hears your child's name mentioned in conversation. I think the idea of establishing a class parents back-up list is an excellent one. This is something you might want to bring up with your class parent or with the school administration. |

OK, not really sure if the parents knew that the nanny had called me or not, but they do know now. Given the lack of surprise, I am guessing that they did know. Considering the intro I had to give (I am Ess, the mother of J who is in M's class...etc.), I am virtually a stranger, and they should be (and perhaps were not) concerned about sending their child home with someone that nobody knows well. Spoke to the dad, anyway, and expressed my concern that things were OK. Also made it clear that my son is in the afterschool program. He said things were fine....nothing more. I said nothing more, think I got the point across pleasantly, and off we went. I still think it's odd though, and still think it is nervy on the part of the nanny. I wouldn't send either of my children home with just anybody, but that's just me. No explanation for anyone else. Again, thanks to all for your advice. |

Ess- do you do older people, too? I'm out of town on Friday & TS needs a ride to 3:15p a doctor's appointment on the UES. It should work for you because, unless you get stuck in Holland Tunnel traffic on the way home, you should be able to get your kid at 5:30p. Oh - do you mind starting dinner when you drop her off?

Ess - You are wonderful! You can pick me up at 7:30 am, figure a little over an hour commute, then you're free for the day until about 4:30 or so when you'll need to head back here to pick me up. I like my steak medium rare please! Thanks - you're a lifesaver. Oh, and can you bring a copy of the Post and the Times please... |

Creamy. Since you'll be out and about anyway, I'm leaving a basket of laundry on my front porch. Pick up at your leisure. Sorry I didn't have time to sort. I just couldn't find the time. You ROCK!!! |
