More bagged body parts found in reservation Maplewood crime scene yields no clues about victim's identity Monday, January 09, 2006 BY RALPH ORTEGA AND KASI ADDISON Star-Ledger Staff Three additional bags filled with body parts were found dumped in South Mountain Reservation yesterday after a sheriff's officer discovered part of a human leg stuffed in a black garbage bag along South Orange Avenue in Maplewood. Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said the three additional bags were found near the first bag by the same officer. "We have legs, arms, thighs," he said. "No feet, torso, head or hands." Fontoura said the age, ethnicity and gender of the victims or victim was unclear. The remains were taken to the Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark. Throughout much of the afternoon and evening police, using cadaver dogs, combed the area near where the bags were found. Detectives and K-9 officers stood under a broken street lamp examining the four bags outside a section of forest about a quarter mile into the park. "Looks like one (victim), multiple body parts," said one of the investigators at the scene. The discovery was made around 3:30 p.m. while officer Andrew Romo was patrolling near the entrance of the reservation at South Orange Avenue and Glenview Road, Fontoura said. "He spotted a trash bag on the side of the road, went over to inspect it and discovered a human shin," he said. "He looked around 50 to 100 yards up the road and located three other bags with human parts." Fontoura said the bags were likely thrown from a car as it was driving up the mountain deeper into the reservation, which includes portions of four Essex County towns -- Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange and West Orange. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating, Fontoura said. Last night parts of South Orange Avenue remained blocked off as police continued their investigation. The area near where the bags were found was illuminated by large lamps and police were seen walking in and out of the park with garbage bags. Yesterday marked the fifth body, or body parts, that have been found in the reservation in a decade. In 2001, a man walking his dog near Bear Lane stumbled upon two suitcases, one of which contained the body of a badly decomposed woman. Authorities later determined the body was Brenda Miller, a 34-year-old Brooklyn woman who worked in a New York shoe store. She had been reported missing a week earlier. In 1995, two dismembered bodies were found stuffed inside two suitcases near Crest Road. The victims were eventually identified as 36-year-old Fakhat Askerov and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Larisa Jakovleva, both of New York. Parts of the couple's bodies also washed up near Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn. In the fifth instance, police found a body in the back seat of a burned-out car but said it didn't appear the death was a homicide. Last night residents to the east of the park said they didn't know about the grisly find but knew there was a crime scene from police directing traffic away from the South Orange entrance to the park. "Body parts in my backyard? Oh my, nothing was said to me," said Diane Levine, 50, whose house was behind the first crime scene. Though they remembered the earlier incidents, residents were still shocked by the latest find. "I moved out of Jersey City to get away from all this crap," Mike Yaffe said. "It's scary, very scary."

"In 2001, a man walking his dog near Bear Lane stumbled upon two suitcases, one of which contained the body of a badly decomposed woman." So I'm curious, is there "good" decomposition? Or "bad" composition? "Badly decomposed" seems redundant. |

Ugh! Articles say the woman, whose body was found way back when, was killed by her husband. I couldn't find any that said who killed the couple. Just wondering who dumps bodies in the reservation. Who's missing? (I can think of someone who's going to be missing--that guy in Staten Island who shot the mafia guy whose brother was harassing his daughter. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/373551p-317538c.html |
