There's also a Wegman's in Woodbridge, just beyond the Woodbridge Center. I believe that's the store closest to Maplewood. I only go there occasionally, and then only when it's cold, so the food doesn't spoil. I almost find the size of the place a bit overwhelming.

The big A&P in Kenilworth is also pretty nice, right off the GSP at Exit 138.

Out over by Route 10 (past the traffic circle) is a very nice Pathmark. It got to be too much of a haul for me, but it's big, clean and never too crowded. I think it's open 24 hours.

If you have occassion to go to Westfield, say to Trader Joe's, there's a very nice Shoprite on North Ave. right on the Garwood/Westfield border.

Why oh why doesn't some supermarket executive read these posts to see that affluent, educated consumers are willing to drive in excess of 20 - 30 minutes to get to a good grocery store. I mean my god, has there ever been so captive a market? And here is South ORange, we have an abandoned site for a gourmet store that our leaders have botched time and time again, (sigh)

The only thing I pine for since moving is a good grocery store. I used to have a Stop & Shop 2 minutes from my house, and I took it for granted.

Wegman's would be fabulous. I've driven to the Bridgewater one. Too far for groceries.

Oddly enough, when I lived in New Orleans we had a grocery store called Schwegmann's. Schwegmann's was an amazing thing. In one trip you could buy a bike for your kid, turtle meat for soup, and any other grocery item you could think of. It was an experience.

The South Orange site is too small for any of the large supermarket chains.

Yea Ratso, but as was previously mentioned regarding the Kings in Maplewood, it is possible for grocery retailers to make great profits from smaller stores.

You mentioned driving 20-30 minutes to go to a good supermarket, which I took to mean Wegmans, since that was what was discussed as being 20-30 minutes away. Wegmans and other Super-Supermarkets take up acres and acres of space. Maybe if we leveled the land from 1st to third, from the train to Valley, maybe that would be enough space (and I wouldn't be completely opposed to it).

Besides, SO Village is not Maplewood Village. I'd love for it to be, but it's not.

Kriss- are you speaking about the Pathmark behind Olive Garden? IF so, has it recently been renovated? I was there probably last year at the holidays and was really turned off...produce looked old, meat was not up to what I like, it was kind of grimy looking...
That is why I am raving about the Shop Rite in Springfield just past Bed Bath and Beyond...their quality of product was always good (IMO) but it was grimy looking...it has a real fresh feel about it now...
Let me know about that Pathmark...I pass there often and would stop if there has been a change...Thanks,

BTW, CageyD, it's Rastro, like the dog from the jetsons. Not Ratso, Dustin Hoffman's character in Midnight Cowboy.

The Stop & Shop on Stuyvesant & Vauxhall in Union is OK for produce, and has a decent range of dairy, cereals, pasta, etc. The deli is pretty basic, cold cuts/old-style salads. We haven't had any problems with bad dairy or veggies, but haven't tried meat/ chicken there.

It's convenient on the way back to Maplewood from the Parkway north exit through McDonald's onto Vauxhall.

The Pathmark on 10 near Olive Garden used to be a Grand Union, and we did ALL our shopping there. Terrific store, with a great butcher counter, excellent produce etc.; but once it changed hands it degenerated very quickly into a typical Pathmark.

BGS - yes I meant that Pathmark by the O.G. I haven't been in a couple of years - since we had kids it's just too far to drive. But I was going there right after it opened and thought it was great, especially compared to our local markets. I guess it went downhill since then. Too bad.

Twice I found new sell by stickers pasted over old ones ... at Kings.
I will not buy my meats there.

So I went to the Shoprite in Springfield on Sunday thanks to BGS's suggestion.

Pros: It wasn't crowded at all at 10am. But that could have been the crappy weather factor. It is a nice store, and I actually thought pretty well laid out. Produce and meat were nice and fresh. Deli didn't have a 2 hour wait like Kings does. Much better than SR in Millburn.

Cons: Didn't have a bunch of staples on my list so I had to go to Whole Foods to suppliment. Parking lot sucks.

I also didn't see much of a price difference, but I don't really price by item so I'm sure I saved some money.

Bottom line, I wouldn't mind going again. But because they didn't have several of my weekly staples, and because I haven't yet had a problem at Kings, and because I didn't seem to save a large amount of money, I will probably be going back to SH Kings next week.

About the lack of space for a large grocery store--I used to shop in a store in Miami that had a really inventive use of space. The store was built over the parking lot. You'd park your car, go upstairs to the store, do your shopping, pay, and then your bags would come down to the parking lot via this neat conveyer belt system. I was tickled by it every time I used it.

Maybe we're not relaxed enough to handle that kind of set up. I have a hard time picturing most of us saying goodbye to our hard-won groceries as they disappear down some invisible tunnel and waiting possibly an extra 60 seconds to retrieve them.
