This actually made me lol. I was driving behind a giant Hummer today on Morris Ave in Summit, where there is minor road construction going on. There is a place in the road where the pavement changes slightly and there's a small bump. The Hummer came to an almost complete stop and gingerly navigated the 2 inch bump. Good thing that driver had a Hummer!! You never know when you'll have to go "off road!" |

Hey. I saw a stupid Hummer in the parking lot by the Post Office in Maplewood village taking up TWO parking spots. Talk about babies |

When I see a Hummer, I give them the bird. What repulsive vehicles. They are often driven by men with inferiority complexes. Reject SUVs in 2006. |

Just an FYI. The Real Hummer is based on the actual military model. The H2 is based on the Suburban platform. The H3 is based on the Calorado platform. In other words. Buy the H2 or H3 is a WASTE OF MONEY! |

Why do you need a vehicle "based on the actual military model" to drive to Shoprite? |

I think they look so ridiculous they make me laugh. Nothing like using a military vehicle to buy groceries and schlep dry cleaning. Absolutely absurd. |

There was a New Yorker cartoon a year or two ago. A couple of hoodlums were peering into a giant SUV by standing on the bumper. One says to the other, "No, there's no stereo inside, but there's an orchestra pit."

Don't see how driving a hummer to get groceries is any more absurd than driving a BMW, Lexus or Mercedes -- all of which I see crowding the grocery store pickup lane. If you NEED a lexus, you can imagine how someone could NEED a hummer.

I think parking stickers should be sold by the foot. Somebody who drives a big SUV to the station should pay twice as much as the guy with the mini Cooper. After all, two of them can fit in the same spot as one Hummer! |

Tom, not to far off. A lot of states charge higher registration fees for heavier vehicles. Also, in states that have a personal property tax, expensive vehicles get hammered. |

At least a Lexus is a sedan, and not as likely to maim or kill other people in an accident (like a stupid Hummer). |

THere is a housekeeper/babysitter on our street who drives a big fat yellow hummer and parks it everyday M-F in front of the house next to the one she works in! I hate having to look at it. It has tainted the look and feel of our neighborhood! I'd be even more out of my mind if I livednext door or across the street. I want to get big letters that say SCHOOL BUS and put it on the side. |

Ligeti, I don't like Hummers either. There's was one across the street from us in Jersey City. The driver was not only selfish as can be but an extraordinarily poor driver to boot - he hit multiple cars attempting to back the Black Behemoth out of his driveway. HOWEVER, saying that "they are often driven by men with inferiority complexes" just sounds foolish. That's clearly an un-substantiated, attitude-driven projection on your part. I'm sure they're often driven by hookers, Moms, tennis pros, bankers, hip-hop moguls, banjo strummers, trust-fund youths, people with disabilities, Democrats and others that may just have poor judgement in automobiles and a momentary lapse in their empathy lobe. Not only that, I have read that men with inferiority complexes sometimes drive Volvos, Hondas, BMWs, and the ocassional Cadillac. (Now THERE's a car about which I've always wanted to sponsor a sociological study.) |

Reminds me of a commercial I love where everyone is driving some kind of giant yellow construction vehicle to pick the kids up at school. Makes me laugh every time. And I kind of agree with Ligeti: "Hummers" (interesting name!) are generally driven by men with inferiority complexes (read: very small penises)! They really are one of the stupidest cars on the face of the planet today! And, probably, the reason the one in the original post had to slow down over a bump was because they would have had their brains bounced out of their heads if they had taken it any faster. A luxery ride it ain't. |

Don't know about that one newone. I don't think women generally tie their sense of self worth to the size of their clitoris. Whereas penis size tends to be a big (no pun intended) issue with most men! |

I believe most people choose to drive a Hummer because they want to appear to be big, powerful and aggressive. The manufacturers of these vehicles also believe their typical customer is self-absorbed. True, they may be democrats, tennis players, and banjo strummers, but it all adds up an inferiority complex, in my opinion. And I doubt the moms who drive these things probably didn't make the purchase decision. I've seen Brittany Spears look-alikes in Hummers, but never a Mom with a couple of kids strapped into car seats.

To be honest I have never seen the attraction of Hummers as an urban assault vehicle. They really don't have much interior room, the driving position is cramped, get lousy mileage and driving on a narrow road is a white knuckles experience. OK, yah got a weekend house at the end of a dirt road with a 15% incline in Vermont? Maybe they make sense for you, but otherwise it is a showoff vehicle, but so are Mercedes, Bimmers, Lexi, etc. |

"but never a Mom with a couple of kids strapped into car seats" That's exactly who got into the Hummer I saw taking up two spots the other day. She said "hop in kids" and they proceeded to hook up climbing rope and carribeaners so they could rock climb their way into the thing. |

If I recall correctly haven't the sales of the H2 plummetted in the last year, I don't think they have much longer. With gas up $.30 since Xmas more small car sales in the future. |

I just can't seem to understand, why someone would need a hummer for the oh SO treacherous terrain of suburbia. Really now, is the down town expedition for a carton of milk that dangerous? You really NEED that 15 miles per gallon, military vehicle to drive down and get it? I must be missing something. :/ |

The real question is two- or three-fold? Why do you need a Hummer in NJ? Why do you need a Hummer to navigate the wilds of Essex County? Why should you be driving a Hummer in Essex County traffic with your ear glued to your mobile phone, as I see numerous people (of both genders) do? |

Soulful Mr. T, Actually, there is evidence to support Ligeti's suggestion that Hummers (and other over-sized SUV's) are driven by insecure self-absorbed consumers. I read a book a couple years ago "High and Mighty" by Bradshaw (?). High and Mighty explains the history of SUV's, the excesses and disregard for safety, the environment, emissions regulations, etc. A very interesting chapter details the marketing stratgy and profile of the ideal SUV customer - Married with children, concerned with image over functionality, trendy, less social then Mini-van owners, less likely to do volunteer work. can't remember it all, I'd have to dig up the book. BTW - This profile of the big SUV driver comes from market research companies hired by the car manufacturers. |

I think the author is Keith Bradsher (NY Times). He also quotes a market researcher who says: "SUV drivers generally don't care about anyone else's kids but their own, are very concerned with how other people see them rather than what's practical, and they tend to want to control or have control over the people around them." I can't wait for thes bullying, repulsive vehicles are off the roads. Men will have find something else to prop up their self-esteem. |

If women are driving most of these vehicles, that may mean men will be abandoning them for the same reason "mom-mobiles" fell out of fashion. Then again, this thesis assumes that men are always on the leading edge of car fashion, which could well be wrong.

Tom and Soulful Mr. - I dug the book out of the attic - LIgeti is spot on, it's by Keith Bradsher. Tom - the book goes into detail how women influence car-buying. Soulful - I suppose the market research companies did massive surveys and sociological research to document their profiles. It really was an eye-opening book - I recommend it to anyone who wonders why there are so many humungous cars driving around the suburbs when we really don't have back-road areas that the average Camry couldn't handle. I didn't finish the book feeling any animosity for SUV consumers. I did hold disdain for the automobile marketers who knowlingly exploit their buyers' weaknesses and fears and sell vehicles that put non-tank drivers at risk, as well as SUV drivers and their passengers. |
