Too good to pass up from a pot-stirring perspective And while I don't think Andy actually said this stuff, I don't agree with all of it... but some of it DOES sound pretty reasonable to me. Andy Rooney said on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back: I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers. The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door. Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game. I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, that is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts! ARE YOU LISTENING MARTHA BURKE? I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion. I have the right "NOT" to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off. When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the Law of Probability. I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English! My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours. I think the police should have every right to shoot your sorry *** if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines. I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business. We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations. I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor. I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television. That doesn't stop you from watching them. I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that's better, and put your name on the building. It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid; and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say "NO!" I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement. And, please, stay home until that new lip ring heals. I don't want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me French fries! I am sick of "Political Correctness." I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa; so how can they be "African-Americans"? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else And if you don't like my point of view, tough... |

What I don't understand is the need of propagators of Internet demagoguery to erroneously attribute these screeds. Do they think this blather gains credibility if Andy Rooney or George Carlin said it.

Alberto you sure come across as either a hypocrite or schizo on MOL between your Christian espousal of a creche in town and your nasty comments on some other threads. Hurting your credibilty man. as for the post...I have gotten it from Andy Rooney, George Carlin, and Oliver North. Basically its rubbish. |

It's rubbish? So nobody will object if I stage the WASP Homecoming Queen competition at Columbia High School in the Spring? Regardless of the source, some of the comments in the message are worthy of discussion. |

I think the people attribute these things to "reliable sources" to give them some credibility, as it were. If I HAD checked Snopes, I probably still would have posted it just for the discussion value (such as it is). I have to admit, I like the part about the police... guns... Gates.... |

"someone please tell me what is so awful about that list?" Libertarain, I'll tell you what is wrong with the list. Any person who would walk around mouthing all those "red herrings" (to borrow from Dave23) comes off as a Archie Bunker wannabe. I'm sure there is something in there that anyone could agree with. Yes I get the fact that the Boy Scouts are Boys and the Girl Scouts are calls. What that has to do with Martha Burke trying to open up Augusta is beyond me. Anyone who would be so worked up to mouth all these things has a chip on their shoulder, and is a person who I would defintely hold in low regard. For instance the garbarge about the UNCF, etc being discriminatory is soley lacking in perspective and speaks to racism. All of those items and periodicals came into being because America was blind to anything that would help or promote causes of interest to African Americans. In 5th grade (1975) my teacher assigned the class a project for Black History Month. I can still remember some of the racist remarks like "What about White History Month". People who are staying things like that just aren't getting it. The same thing applies to the following nonsense " I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa; so how can they be "African-Americans"? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else" Plenty of people called themselves Irish- Americans, Italian Americans etc. The term African American exists because most black people didn't have the luxury of knowing what country their ancestors hailed from. In short the caveman died out along time ago. Welcome to the real world. If you don't like it I guess it's tough. |

Libertarian, Just a few of the herrings: - Just about anybody with the knowledge will tell you that Windows is not "the best". - The trend of PC is vastly overblown. If someone considers themselves African American, who am I to say they should consider themselves something else? (If you truly believed in individualism, you'd agree.) - The "it takes a village" idea: Only a fool would think that the society that a child grows up in has NO effect on a child. Hillary never said that the "village" has a greater effect on children than the parents. - Cops: How do you threaten someone while you are running away? - 70%: What about areas where the arrest rate is vastly skewed? As in, the vast majority of the country? - What country told us that the constitution is a living document? I've never heard a "country" speak. - There are no "special loan programs" for immigrants. and on and on and on. Red herrings, red herrings, red herrings. You've been duped again. |

Teddy Roosevelt took on the robber-barron capitalists because they exerted an unheard of degree of control over the economy of the United States at that time. There is no comparison between the economic power of Microsoft versus the economic dominance of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil. |

It's because of Roosevelt taking on the robber barons that there was a mechanism in place (anti-trust law) to act as a speed bump to Microsoft. That's the comparison. |

Just about anybody with the knowledge will tell you that Windows is not "the best" if you base it on sales and world wide usage, i would claim that you are wrong. if you have any data to the opposite i would love to see it. The trend of PC is vastly overblown. in your opinion. i disagree. there have been many essays from distinguished professors that agree with my opinion. i will be happy to cite them if requested. Cops: How do you threaten someone while you are running away? so the only people shot by police are running away at the time. they never stand there, refusing to follow police orders. hmmmm. interesting. 0%: What about areas where the arrest rate is vastly skewed? As in, the vast majority of the country? you are changing the hypothetical to suit your agenda. please respond on the basis of the hypothetical presented. What country told us that the constitution is a living document? I've never heard a "country" speak if you believe that the constitution is not a living document then you must want the u.s to conform to the original content of the constitution and oppose any changes to it that reflect modern society. There are no "special loan programs" for immigrants. if you go to the sba website you will find that there are loan programs designed for recently naturalized citizens. want to try some more, or are we done here? |

Macs were, and still are, much more expensive than PCs. And not as easy for an IT manager to control. So from the POV of the corporate IT departments who bought PCs en masse, they are the better machine. Macs are much easier for the end user, but even there Mr. Jobs miscalculated that people would spend more money for a superior machine. They didn't. (With the iPod however, the price point/differential is low enough for people to buy into it- e.g. I will pay $75 more for the reallly cool mp3 player b/c it's only $300, but I will not pay $1,000 more for the really cool laptop, because then you're talking $2,400) Mr. Gates, who bet on price and on lots of people making inexpensive machines for the Microsoft OS, is much richer. History of capitalism in the 20th & 21st century shows that the best product (for the consumer) is often not the one that becomes the most popular product for a wide range of reasons ranging from marketing missteps to production snafus to sleazy business tactics. Product design is not Darwinian. Copperfield (a lifelong Mac user and certainly no liberal) |

You don't know me, or know my situation, but I'm glad I don't know you. Now for a thread drift...Why is it that there is so much litter all over all the streets in downtown Maplewood? I spent 15 minutes today with said 4 year old cleaning up trash around the Bank of America because I didn't really have a good answer for him as to why people just threw their trash all over the ground. With all the environmentally sensitive Prius driving people in this lovely town, how come they can't teach their kids or themselves to put trash in the trash cans? |

Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door. Black people are an identifiable minority. "White people" are not, they are just those who are not Black. I have no problem with an organization called "The American Jewish Congress" or a "Miss Polish-America" beauty contest. I would have a problem with "The American Gentile Congress" or the "Miss Non-Polish America" contest. Not to mention that for many years the Miss America Pagent was effectively the Miss "White-America" Pagent. Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game. Yeah, but guns make it easier for someone to be a killer. I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion. Why should anyone have an "opinion" on someone else's sexual practices. I have no opinion on what position my heterosexual neighbors should use when having sex. How can homosexuality be "wrong"? If I "feel" having black skin is "wrong" is that just an "opinion"? I have the right "NOT" to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off. I agree. I don't have to be tolerant of bigots. But I have no right to assault them or mis-treat them. When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the Law of Probability. Huh? again. We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations. Well of course the Constitution is "a living document", and anyone who can read English can interpret it , but I haven't noticed a lot of "foreigners" worrying about it. I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor. It seeems to me that lately many government policies are based on hating the poor and pitying the rich. I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television. That doesn't stop you from watching them. ? I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more.
