Two tickets to each concert - fantastic seats (fifth row, center, in tiny, acoustically great Merkin Concert Hall on West 67th Street in Manhattan).

The January 25th concert, 8 p.m., features the music of Delta bluesman Skip James with performers Chocolate Genius, Alvin "Youngblood" Hart, Sonny Landreth, Gary Lucas, and Cindy Cashdollar.

The February 1st concert, 8 p.m., features the music of Charlie Patton (another Delta bluesman) with performers John Hammond, Toshi Reagon, Rory Block, and David Tronzo.

I am a subscriber so these seats are $30 each (regular price, $35 each).

The Feburary 1st tickets are gone ...

I went to the first concert in this series of four, which is titled, "Blues Fallin' Like Rain." The January 18th concert was dedicated to the work of Mississippi John Hurt, and featured Jorma Kaukonen, Brandon Ross, Bill Morrissey and Jen Chapin, with a surprise cameo by Dan Zanes and the "How Not to Get Rich" orchestra. The presentation of five, highly individualized interpretations of Hurt's work was moving and mainly musically delightful. (Ben Ratliff's review in the NY Times conveys the nuances far better than I can manage to take the time to do here.)

I don't know how Merkin or David Spelman, the Festival's producer, assemble such talented line ups and charge only $35 per ticket. I highly recommend trying to get tickets for the next three concerts in the series - the Skip James and Charlie Patton concerts described in my first posting, and also the Elizabeth Cotten concert on February 8th, which features Taj Mahal, Mike Seeger and others.
