Got a voice mail from her daughter Dana today, that her Mom, Jackie (Cain) Kral will be performing at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair on Wednesday, January 25. Jackie and her late husband Roy have performed with just about everyone who is anyone on the jazz scene since the 1940's. She'll be performing with a big band and it should be a rare and wonderful evening.
I'll post more info as I get it. |

This month, Diane Moser's Composers Big Band celebrates 9 years of monthly concerts of new music for big band!.The band has had over 80 guest composers and performers these past nine years, not to mention .guest actors, poets, peace concerts, and mini-operas!
Special guests this month include the wonderful vocalist Jackie Cain, and guest conductor, Bill Kirchner(from South Orange).
In 1957, Jackie Cain and Roy Kral recorded two albums for ABC-Paramount with all-star big bands. The first, BITS AND PIECES, was done in NYC on March 6 with charts by Ralph Burns, Bill Holman, Quincy Jones, and Ernie Wilkins. The second, FREE AND EASY, was done in L.A. in May and June; all charts were by Holman. (BITS AND PIECES has never been reissued on CD; FREE AND EASY is available only as a Japanese import.)
These charts were never performed again. But on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at 8 p.m., Jackie Cain will be singing with Diane Moser's Composers Big Band at Trumpets in Montclair, NJ, performing some of these charts for the first time since 1957. (Jackie's husband and musical partner Roy Kral died in 2002.)
