I would watch the Grammys(tm) if this actually happened! Sly - make some new music!! (CNN) -- According to a press release from the Grammy Awards, there's going to be a special tribute to Sly and the Family Stone at the February 8 awards. And according to a report in Friday's Washington Post, the tribute may include the reclusive Sly Stone himself, along with the original band members. Ron Roecker, a spokesman for the Recording Academy -- the organization that oversees the Grammys -- wouldn't confirm for the Post that the reunion is on the Grammy-night schedule. "The facts are what we put in the press release," Roecker said. "As far as anything else, it's all just rumor. But we do believe that he is attending the Grammy Awards." He added: "It seems like the right time for him. We're thrilled that we'll be able to do this." The Post could not reach either Stone's manager, Jerry Goldstein, or Stone himself for comment. Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, hasn't spoken to the press in about 20 years. However, sources told the Post that rehearsals are scheduled to begin next week -- though nobody was willing to say how things would pan out. Sly and the Family Stone, one of the most influential bands in pop music history, broke up in the mid-'70s after several years of coping with drug problems and its leader's erratic behavior. Stone became known as much for missing concerts and poor behavior as he was for his groundbreaking combination of rock, soul, psychedelia and funk, exemplified in songs such as "Stand!," "Dance to the Music," "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" and "Family Affair." "I heard 'Stand!,' and it was like: Man, forget it! That band was perfect. And Sly was like all the Beatles and all of Motown in one. He was the baddest thing around," funk legend George Clinton told the Post. Motown copied Stone -- the Temptations' 1969-70 hits, such as "I Can't Get Next to You" and "Ball of Confusion," are obviously influenced by him -- and his sound can be heard today in everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Michael Jackson. Will he be at the Grammys? That's still anyone's guess. "I don't think Sly has been hurting from his underground status -- I think he likes the mystique," Rickey Vincent, author of "Funk: The Music, the People, and the Rhythm of the One" and host of a funk radio show in the San Francisco Bay area, told the Post. "But it would be nice to see him make a triumphant return."

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Folks been tryin' to get Sly back for years. I'd pay huge money to see him again. I saw Sly and the Family Stone live back in, what, 68? 69? I know it was before Woodstock. It was either at MSG or at Wollman Rink in Central Park. Man, they wuz the bomb. And yes, Sly invented funk and interracial, psychedelic soul and influenced so many, from Miles (big-time)to Mahavishnu, and from Fela Kuti in Africa to Carlhinos Brown in Brazil. I got their CD "STAND!" last year and it is unbelievably, freighteningly good. Musically, politically, rhythmically, and on and on. I hadn't heard it in a long time and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Hey Boppa Ree Bop! |

I was supposed to see Sly and TFS in Hartford, CT at the Bushnell Theater in the early 1970's and he cancelled at the last minute. Man, was that a bummer. |

Well... I almost hate to bring it up... but what did y'all think of Sly's appearance on the Grammy's? It would have been great, except... well, you can tell that he's had some serious health problems and he was on stage for only a few minutes. Word in the biz is that he was terribly, terribly nervous beforehand. He wants to start playing again, but his manager (same guy he's had since the old days) owns his music and his name and is being a first-class cretin about everything. Sly has a sister who has a band on the West Coast, and wanted to join them and do some shows as The Family Stone. But he didn't want the other former members involved because there is still so much bad blood. He has apparently been denied the use of the band name, and after that unfortunately Grammy appearance, who knows if we'll ever see him in public again? |

Notey, I thought it was a bit scary and not a little depressing. Sly looked quite unwell and didn't seem to have much of a voice nor could I see if he was actually playing the keyboard. I assume the hair was glued on. I had just gotten the "Different Strokes by Different Folks" CD a few days before and was waaay underwhelmed by it. It seemed like one of those CDs done just to raise money for an artist in need. And the "guest artists" (that phrase makes me ill - still makes me think of Sinatra's DUETS - real puke, if you ask me) on the CD are the ones that performed his songs at the Grammys. Maroon5, John Legend, Joss Stone, Steve Tyler (ugh). What is with Steve Tyler anyway, and the freakin' scaraves on the mike. What an as*hole. They had no right to be up there doing those songs. They sounded like Top 40 bubblegum the way they did them. The CD, by the way, is all remixes, folks performing OVER the original tracks. And for the most part, not adding much in the way of value. |
