I saw the Police on their Zenyatta Mondatta tour with the Go-Go's as the opening band. It was a great show. If that wasn't the best show I saw then it may have been Black Sabbath (post Ozzie) a couple of years later. I actually didn't even know their music when I went but it was an awesome show. I think the worst show I saw was the Cars (Nick Lowe opened) because although I like their music, they were boring live. |

First: Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe at Madison Square Garden. Cool show. Best: Pink Floyd at Yankee Stadium, Summer of 1993. Unbelievable show. My favorite part was the huge disco ball during "Comfortably Numb". Other terrific shows include front row for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (five feet away from Emerson!) and front row and backstage for King Crimson (talked with Bruford and Levin for 30 minutes). Worst: Dream Theatre at a terrible rock club somewhere in central Jersey. It was way too loud, dangerously crowded, and smelly (it's been ten years and I can still smell the place). Plus, their performance was way too sloppy.

hmmm First: Foreigner Best: 8pm show Joe Jackson @ The Orpheum in Boston followed by a 11pm show by the Indigo Girls at the Paradise in Boston. That would be the greatest "night" BEST SHOW: RUSH Dec. 12 1982 Worst: Men at Work I did see the Police in Boston at the Rat when I was in high school. So that would be a Historic show, but they hadn't gelled yet as a trio. And the sound at the Rat was notoriously . "The truth is always a compound of two half- truths, and you never reach it, because there is always something more to say."-- Tom Stoppard

FIRST: Beatles August, 1965, Metropolitan Stadium, Bloomington, Minnesota BEST: Difficult to choose, but I'll go with this triple-bill because I was remembering it recently: Ian Drury and the Blockheads, first opening act Mink DeVille, second opening act Elvis Costello and the Attractions, headliners State Theater, Minneapolis, sometime in 1978 WORST: When I was in college I used to work backstage security for a promoter in Minneapolis, so I had to sit through a lot of dreck. It's hard to say for sure what was the absolute worst, but Peter Frampton was right up there. So was Ted Nugent.

First: I don't remember who it was, all I remember was that it was at City Island in Harrisburg PA, I went with my two older sisters and their biker friends, & I was old enough (or lucky enough) to have a good time. Best: Would have to be a toss up between two "Monsters Of Rock" concerts in Germany, in 1984 & 1986. 1984:AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Y&T, Accept, Mötley Crüe, Tommy Vance 1986: Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Motörhead, Bad News, Warlock, Tommy Vance & the first "Rock-Am-Ring" concert in 1985, held at the Grand Prix raceway "Nürburgring". 1985: U2, Chris de Burgh, Joe Cocker, Rick Springfield, Gianna Nannini, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Saga, Marillion, Huey Lewis, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, and a few others.... The worst, probably had to be in '85 or early '86 when a friend & I hopped in his porsche and flew down the autobahn to see Metallica (I don't remember where), we got a flat along the way and by the time we changed the tire and made it to the concert they wouldn't let us in, but we did manage to swap his donut for a wheel of anotehr porsche in the parking lot. |

First: Elton John / Seatrain / Wishbone Ash (who you say?) Fillmore East 1970ish, in the days when you got three acts per show. Best: Tie: Genesis at Forest Hills, Talking Heads also at Forest Hills. The stadium was two blocks from my apartment, so getting home was a bit easier. Afterthought; ELP at Fillmore East, but that had a lot to do with chemicals. Worst: The Who at Brendan Byrne Arena, went back to the car because the sound was much too loud. |

First: Eric Clapton, Yale Bowl, his first US tour--something like 1973 or 1974, and I was around 14 years old. Went with my older cousins. About 1/2 way through it started to rain, and Eric leapt into a wild rendition of Let It Rain. But even more fun were the people in the crowd--I won't share the stories because my kids might read this someday! His voice was not so good, but the energy and guitar playing more than made up for it. Best: So many great ones. DiMeola and Santana in an outdoor festival, cranking for hours on end; Neil Young doing his entire classic book and then, after the lights came up and half the people left, coming back out in a new persona as a punk rocker and playing a whole other show; The Ramones at Toad's Place (very small club) in the midst of mosh-pit mania, getting crushed by this enormous woman in leather and studs; the Greatful Dead with my summer camp (!) after the counselors suckered the camp owners into letting us go. Worst: So many. Jefferson Starship and Fleetwood Mac in Springfield--both so flat and bored it was depressing; Billy Joel at college--I never made it, got sick drinking Gatorade and Yukon Jack fake stingers; a whole bunch that I simply cannot remember (kids, don't read this either). |

First: Phil Collins at Radio City Music Hall (I think it was 1985)--friend of mine's dad was an entertainment lawyer, etc. and got us tickets. Wasn't really a fan but it was fun to go... Best: Morrissey at the Apollo with David Johansen opening! (2004) FRONT ROW SEATS!!! Story: We had been to the show the night before and knew when he was winding down so towards the end, Mr. Cooper, who had been standing next to me, excuses himself to use the restroom and tells me that he will just wait for me in the back of the theater by the bar since it will be difficult to wend his way back down to the front. Whatever. Throughout the evening, we had been sort of chatting with Michael Imperioli who was sitting behind us and enjoying the show. Show ends. Moz throws his shirt into the audience. Slow motion. I touch it. The guy standing next to me WHERE MR. COOPER SHOULD HAVE BEEN catches it. Where is my husband? At the bar man-flirting with Christopher. I couldn't even be mad because it was such a great evening. Perfect. Worst: Madonna at Giants Staduim in the pouring rain, with an obstructed view for her "Who's That Girl" tour. Really, really bad. |

Guy, I was at that Show Eagles/ Boz. I remember the kick drum opening of "Lowdown". Joe Walsh and Hotel Calif! Also my first. Among the best: The Clash at Bond's, Jeff Beck's "There and Back" at The Capitol, James Brown at the old Lonestar, The English Beat at the Ritz, The Ramones at the Barn at Rutgers (Blue Angel -opening), Springsteen 1985 MSG. Santana in Philly in '77. Cream a few months ago. (just such a mind-blow to actually see them!) Worst: Dickie Betts w/ Great Southern at The Capitol. He walked off stage after a couple of songs. Real hero disappointment. |

Charles, It was probably around 1994 in San Francisco at the Warfield, not long before Angelo Moore disappeared for a while. He was wandering around the audience while the rest of the band was sloppy and trying to get him to play with them. I hear they are back together (with two originals) and touring. |

First and worst combo: The concert that never was--had tickets to go to Lynyrd Skynyrd at MSG when their plane crashed and they died. It was horrible. Ted Nugent replaced them. Wango Tango or some such nonsense. Best: probably Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Garden State Arts Center. Several Genesis shows. Have no recollection of dates. |

It wasn't pay per view. No cameras. I think it was the beginning of their slide into semi-oblivion. Soon after, I recall hearing stories of the band trying to rescue Angelo from some cult. But I never followed them closely enough to know what actually happened. I saw Bungle on their California tour in NYC. I forget the venue. Ridiculously good. Sadly, I think it's over. But Fantomas is great in concert and Patton has new CD coming out with one of his sort-of bands, Tomahawk. |

D'oh! I totally forgot about the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary tribute concert at the Garden. Not only was it a great show with so many acts but my friends brother was road manager for Sophie B Hawkins at the time and he got us all access passes so we were able to go back stage and hang with the musicians and go in the rooms with all the free beer and food and mingle like Wayne and Garth :-) It was a great time. |

Charles, Sorry, I mixed up my Patton projects. I feel the same way about Tomahawk. It's Peeping Tom that I was thinking of. You have to see Fantomas live. Their records don't nearly capture it. California is one of my favorite records. Thanks for the 'bone correction. |

First: Queen- August 9, 1982 at the Meadowlands. It was the last North American tour and a great show . They recently put out "Live at the Bowl" from this same tour that brought back a lot of memories. Best- The Queen show is up there with Rush at Radio City this past tour, the Dead at Saratoga Springs, The Cure (3rd row at radio City), Steve Morse Band at World Stage, and a bunch more. Worst- Jethro Tull on the Crest of a Knave tour at the Meadowlands. I hoped for more classic Tull and got too much stuff like "Steel Monkey". Boston on the Third Stage tour wasn't very good as well. |

Saw 2 great shows at Roosevelt Stadium: Beach Boys / Eagles - summer of '74. Eagles weren't even listed on the ticket & they were awesome. And Eagles / Seals & Crofts / Poco - summer of '75. This was horrible. Dickie Betts was arrested in Saratoga for punching his wife and fighting with cops, so they replaced him at the next show with Zakk Wylde of Ozzy Osbourne fame. Imagine an extended "Elizabeth Reed" jam but remove Dickie's clean lines in favor of heavy metal machine gun guitar riffing. Very bad times. |

First: Springsteen '85 or so Best: Rolling Stones in '89ish. Steel Wheels. I know, they were already well past their prime, but still, I was just blown away by how good a concert they put on. Worst: Van Halen w/ Hagar. Hagar appeared to be trying and he really had a lot of energy. Frankly, I think I liked Hagar more than the assorted Van Halens, they really weren't very good at all. Surprises: Saw a bunch of the artists from Buena Vista Social Club a few years ago at NJPA and that was great. Eric Clapton was a little diappointing. On the concert front, I'm kind of bummed. I haven't been to a concert in what seems like forever (two tykes) and I just got tickets to Emmylou Harris for March in Red Bank and the next day they move the show to a Monday in October, which I won't be able to go to, so those tickets go back. What makes a good Jethro Tull concert? More Aqualung? I think my personal bias is showing. There are some bands that you couldn't pay me to see live and Jethro Tull is among them (along with Yes, Rush, the B52's, Creed, Van Halen ever again...). |

Actually, I may need to change my Best. I saw a blues show at the Paramount theater in about 1993 or so that had the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dr. John, B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Buddy Guy was the clincher for me. He was fantastic. If you ever get the chance to go to a Buddy Guy concert, take it. Same for the Neville Brothers, they put on a good show. I think I saw Steve Earle open for the Neville Brothers in LI one time. |
