We took our two year old to the "Curious George" movie. It was pretty good, but the music by Jack Johnson was freakin' awesome.

I immediately downloaded the soundtrack and have been listening to it all weekend.

Anyone else seen it yet?

Doula,

Try holding your youngest by the arms and swing back and forth while he or she makes monkey sounds. It's a big hit at our house.

Although it's not something I can do for extended periods after all the shoveling.

My son and I saw it on Saturday. He really enjoyed it. And yes, I noticed the music too. Very cool.

Thanks for the great review. I heard one of his songs on the Noggin channel and was boppin' around to it! I definitely have to see it with my boys.

..also, VERY VERY sad to hear about the tragedy with the author. To die like that after bringing such joy to the world. He will live on through the wonderful books he's written. I just read the first book about Curious George - "Cecily G. and the nine monkeys" by H.A. Rey to my son's 1st grade class on Friday. It was a great pick with the movie coming out! It's a great story (and very funny). The kids love it!

Saw it with my kids and their friends on Friday. We all loved it. It was charming and sweet and interesting enough for the adults. There were so many famous scenes - George with the balloons, George on the rocket -- that it was like seeing an old friend.

The music was wonderful; I am definitely buying the CD.

Did anyone else notice that the ship that brought The Man with the Yellow Hat to and from Africa was named "H.A. Rey"? A nice homage to the author.

ess, that's exactly what it was like, seeing an old friend. During the closing credits, when they showed the original artwork I started getting teary. I couldn't figure out why, but that's it.

I was VERY fond of George as a littler Jersey Boy, and when I was five my stuffed George went missing. I guess I never really got over it.

He's back!

One of the kids at the bday party where we saw the movie this weekend had their own (new) stuffed George - go get one Jersey Boy - it won't be the same, but it might be fun!

Oh don't worry. Jersey Boy Jr. has plenty. He brought his to the movie AND wore an official Curious George Yellow Hat.

Wait, do you mean for ME! Is that allowed?

Awwwwww.... Jersey Boy!!! I felt exactly the same way about the artwork.

I got my son a new little Curious George. We also have one that used to be my brother's; it's at least 30 years old.

Bought the CD today as well, but have not yet listened to it.

Oh sure, rub it in. MINE IS GONE! I lost it in Maine! I still have dreams with MY George at the bottom of a lake with fish swimming by his waterlogged smile...

Oh George! GEEEEEOOOOORGE!

Okay. I'm Okay. I just need to listen to a little Jack Johnson. The re-mix is pretty good. Of "Upside Down," that is. Don't worry, I'm okay.

I took my daughters today (we're down in Maryland right now visiting family, so we saw it in Olney, MD). I thought it was just so-so -- kind of silly and predictable, a little hollow somehow, although sweet...but I too loved the music. It's funny, during the movie I was thinking, "I love this music and must hear these songs again," then I found this thread.

I too was glad they brought in some famous stuff, like when he painted the room. That was one of my fave CJ moments from childhood (but I was hoping they'd have the hospital stuff from he swallows a puzzle piece...i had just read that story to my kids in preparation for the movie).

I took my son Saturday and he was in awe. It was his first movie and he loved it! I did too! And it was a nice change to see a childrens' movie that was free of all the annoying adult sub-text (Madagascar had one idiotic song or parody every other minute). This was truly endearing.

JB- where can I get one of those yellow hats for Little Brett?

I saw the movie with my five year old, and thought it sucked. Completely sacharine and unengaging for adults, and actually a little frightening for kids (George, rejected by Man with Yellow Hat, taken away in a cage, locked in deep, dark hold of ship, bound for Africa). Although it all ends happily enough (including the dumbing down of a museum, Hooray!) I have to wonder why the screenwriters felt compelled to mess with the original story line. True, in the original, George is captured by the Man With the Yellow Hat, but at least the books don't dwell on George being ripped away from his family. In the movie, we are treated to full parental rejection, Yikes! Having survived Bambi, Dumbo and other twisted Walt Disney story telling, I suppose the damage this movie inflicted on my child won't be lasting, but it is disconcerting to see your child leaving a movie about a monkey with a sad look on her face.

What movie did you see? There was no mention of George's parents in the movie I saw. The plot reminded me of Sat. morning cartoons, to be sure, but the music was good.

My point is: Kids see the Man with The Yellow Hat AS George's family. Its about trust between an adult and child, and in the movie The Man rejected George.

Xuande, I don't think you give kids enough credit. It wasn't a great movie, but I think you are applying a bit too much textbook psychology to it. And if your child can't get past damage inflicted by the sacharine Curious George movie, then he's going to have a real rough one.

One of my primary complaints about contemporary kids' movies is that they try to "engage adults". One thing I liked about George is that it wasn't filled with dumb wink-wink jokes aimed over the children's heads.

Xuande- What movie DID you see-"Over-analyze This"? I think that sad look on your child's face was from you sucking the joy out life instead of enjoying a simple movie together. Unengaging for adults? What were you expecting, "Schindler's List"?

My kids saw a monkey stow away on a ship to New York and have a wild adventure that ended in a lifelong friendship. And all I saw was a cute little kids' film that brought them joy, which in turn made me happy.

I never liked George. I think it sets a bad tone for the kids. Oh, I know I'm in the minority on this and I have read the stories to each of my kids (and have seen the movie too), I'm just not a fan. This is how I think about it. George is the kid. The man in the Yellow Hat is his father. The kid makes mistake after mistake and never heeds his father's direction. Yet, everything comes out fine in the end everytime. George tears up the City, the cops lock him up, but it turns out that in the process of screwing everything up, he foils a bank robbery and ends up with the keys to the City. I'm not even sure this is an actual George story, but it's always the same basic story anyway. They're archetypal. This is a bad lesson. Don't listen to papa. You're a very lucky little monkey and no matter what you do, there will never be any negative consequences. Ban George!!

Funny, I have always seen George as a monkey who just gets in trouble.....and the Man with a yellow hat loves him for who he is...who knew there was so much more????

Bottom line for me is my kids love him, the smiles on their faces was worth it. Although the $50.00 was a little much.

This thread is becoming unbelievable! You are actually analyzing Curious George!!!
I guess some of you spent hours discussing Wyle E. Cyote and Road Runner!

I'm with Brett on this one. I loved it and my boys had a blast watching the books they love come to life! My LOL moment was the painting of the opera lady's apt. and pouring the paint colors in her bath water....adorably funny. Good clean fun. Jack Johnson's songs are precious and plan on purchasing the CD - as well as the DVD when it comes out.
