Still alive and still a great show. My wife and mother in law go every year. I joined them last year. Was one of the more enjoyable shows I had seen in a long time. I highly recommend you take the oppoortunity to see them.

They're not all still alive. The harpist, Derek Bell, died a few years ago. We saw the Chieftains perform less than a year after his death. There was palpable grief there, and it wasn't a great show. Hopefully, they're all feeling better now and back to their old form. I haven't been to a performance since that show. Our favorite Chieftains story: Before I met my husband, we were both attending University of Maryland near where I grew up. We were comparing notes on our Chieftains concerts and he said that in such-and-such year, he'd seen them perform at the Kennedy Center. I'd seen them perform the same year, about the same time, at Howard County Community College, sponsored by the Howard County Poetry Society. I'd paid like $10 for my ticket in a small, intimate venue - he'd paid like $50 for his in a this massive impersonal (though very nice) theatre. The show I saw then was great - Michael Flatley was touring with them. This was long before Riverdance, and he was just a promising young dancer. |

Unfortunately, the Chieftains' "show" hasn't changed at all in "patter" or routine in more than 10 years. I stopped going several years ago when I noticed there's no real respect for the audience but there's a lot of mechanical playing and stale craic. I find myself gravitating to Altan, Solas, the Saw Doctors, and the Waterboys whenever they're in a place I can get to. Just the humble opinion of a tried and true lover of Celtic music who's not bad at playing music himself. |
