I never was able to get tickets for last weekend's Dan Zanes concert. I am curious how it was and if my 2 year old would have liked it.

We didn't make it either, it wasn't in the budget this time around, but I have friends who went and they said it was great -- apparently Father Goose was there too, and was a big hit. I'm so jealous! I went and bought myself the Houseparty disk instead and have been jamming to it ever since, even when my little one is not around -- I think it's that good. Yay for non-insipid music for kids!

The 11 am show was pretty great. (Who knew the Maplewood Women's Center has such a nice performance space?) Many years ago, I used to occasionally catch Dan and his brother Warren as frontment for the Del Fuegos, a solid rock outfit on the Boston scene in the '80s. It was, therefore, kind of weird to watch Dan after these many years, exhorting my five-year-old to do the hokey pokey. Bottom line, I guess, is that he's still an engaging performer and writes (and covers) good songs.

PS Kudos to the guy in the audience who restrung the D-string on Dan's guitar after he popped it early on in the set. No roadies in Dan's second act I guess. Dan rewarded his kindness by letting the guy lead the hokey pokey at the end of the show.

Sounds cool! I wish we had been there! So, what's the next kids' concert and when?

It was good - not to loud, not too short, not too long. Lively, and fun. Worth $60 for a family of three? Well...only in special places like Maplewoood. Odd to see so many parents of toddlers who are over the age of 35 in one place.

I remember the Del Fuego's fondly. And for some reason Mission of Burma as well. Part of why it would have been hard for me to see this perf.

I remember the Middle East shows and can hardly imagine that this is the same guy. But hey, Boston loves their home-town bands to death. Sometimes running them into the ground.

What does Dan Zanes have to do with Mission of Burma?

Dan's also playing on Sunday, April 30 at the Greek Amphitheatre in Montclair.

There's a great kids concert next Sunday (3/12) at Millburn Middle School featuring Ben Rudnick and Friends. Tickets are $9 at the door, and all proceeds benefit the Millburn Co-op Nursery school. There's also a bake sale at the show with lots of goodies for $1.

Show starts at 1:30.

Check out Ben here:

Very listenable, and the kids will have a blast.
