Did anyone see this show on PBS Monday night on "Great Performances"? I thought it was great. Macca telling stories (although most of them have been told many times in the past)and performing in the intimate setting of Abbey Rd surrounded by the vintage equipment (mellotron, harmonium, 4 track recorder and old mixing board). What did everyone think? Will it be repeated? Can we buy a copy from PBS I wonder? |

I got a copy of the soundtrack about two weeks ago and listened to that Lady Madonna version and was hooked. The show was really, truly great. And not just becasuse I'm a Macca fan. While his voice is definitely fading, his talent is just immense. Regarding Chaos, I must say that I think it's a fabulous Cd. Usually I listen to his stuff for a week or two and then forget about it. This CD, however, keeps getting played. I recorded the show and will transfer it to DVD hopefully this weekend. If the quality is good, which I think it will be, I'll burn you a copy. But first I have to finish my Hendrix project. |

Thanks, Sbenois. Even if we can't agree about baseball, we'll always have the Beatles! As for the CD, I too think its his best in many years. If you go onto the Chaos at Abbey Road website (link it through PBS/Great Performances), the producer, who you see on the show, is pretty frank in his comments. He implies that much of the recent stuff has been crap but Macca didn't have anyone around him with enough guts to tell him so. |

Sbenois, Y'know, I'm conflicted about this show. I Tivo'd it and re-ran it twice to make sure of my opinion. And the Chaos & Creation @ Abbey Road show was, for me, everything I love and cringe about Sir Paul. There was "the George song" ... cringe There was "a Lady Revisited"... AMAZING There was Macca flirting with MILFs playing the mellotron a la 60's style ... loved it. There was Paul "experimenting" with <gulp> <double-gulp> wine glass rubbing. Can you say Mitch Miller? (Those freaks were right when they said you was dead) And Jenny Wren. Did you hear his vocals? w-o-w! Peradventure story? Heard it 1,000 times now. But still like/hate English Tea. The last 15 minutes were Paul overdubbing himself on several instruments (McCartney II?) to prove how versatile he is. It sounded like Come And Get It by Badfinger (which Paul overdubbed himself on several instruments), so there's nothing new or different or "experimental" at all. Still, I loved it. So, aside from the pseudo-experimental moments where Paul tries to show he's more artsy than John, (huge cringe) I watched a genius playing his "oldies" (Blackbird) and was sure that anyone who saw Mozart play live must have felt the same way I did at that moment. 3 stars.

Well I know what you mean but as far as I'm concerned, he's earned the right to give as many cringe worthy moments as he wants. P.S. (Paul was better than John) |

Agreed, Sbenois. And I sang with Paul (as you did) on "I've Got A Feeling", the John part. Dintchya? |

Yeah. One thing you should know is that this special was recorded in July of last year (before the tour and the album's release) so at the time, no one had yet heard some of those stories. In fact, the people in that audience were some of the first to hear those new songs and their background. That's gotta get him another half a star, yes? |

OK, he gets a FULL star for that. But loses a half star for posing with baby seals on an ice floe in Canada. 3.5 it is. |

C'mon, did you see that picture of him and his wife snuggling with the seals? You'd never see Yoko doing that.

No, Yoko would never snuggle up to furry animals.

The overdubbing routine was not done by way of showing us his versatility. He was just demo-ing the old 4 track and mixing board. All of the parts played were grade school simple (including the bass track where he's capable of producing lines that are hard enough to follow with the ear-let alone play). If he wanted to flaunt his versatility, you would have seen some real pyrotechnics. By the way, the "George Song" sounds uncannily just like something George would write. |
