I am not a fan of award shows, but was surfing, and can't stop watching. John Stewart is hilarious! |

Dolly Parton was singing her song for the 'Transamerica' movie. She is so scary looking....her facial bone structure eerily resembles Michael Jackson's and her lips were so pumped up with collagen they looked like they were about to explode. Perhaps she uses the same plastic surgeon as Michael Jackson? Rachel Weisz (Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for 'The Constant Gardener') is such a natural beauty and looked so elegant, yet she she is seven months pregnant . Lauren Bacall seems to be either drunk or has senile dementia.....!!!! |

The March of the Penguins team didn't mention Morgan Freeman - what a jip! The performance of the "Crash" song was VERY WELL done...and J.Lo, you looked amazing in that beautiful dress but ease up on the self-tanner! |

At least Brokeback won for adapted screenplay and director. I haven't seen Crash, so I can't vouch for it. Jon Stewart was great. Very, very refreshing. I think Lauren Bacall was not drunk. They could have given her a little help walking out and they could have made the TelePrompTer more readable. I felt bad for her; she looked foolish when she is simply getting on in years. |

Lauren Bacall is 81 years old. Give the grand broad a break. I thought that Brokeback had the Best Picture award locked, although I thought Crash was a better movie so I was happy for that win. I liked Felicity Huffman in Transamerica, but I didn't think the movie was strong enough for her to win. |

Count me as one who really liked the Oscars this year. Haven't watched much of it for the last few years as it seemed slow, boring and kinda irrelevant. Really liked this year! Jon Stewart was great, liked the montages and the occasional Daily Show-esque "commercial" jibes. I thought the "Pimp" song win was pandering (hah!) to the world of rap. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but some songs are OK. To me, this one was not one of the better ones. Not the choices were fab. I was happy Rachel W one, and Hoffman. Pretty shocked that Reese Witherspoon won. Have not seen Brokeback yet, but did think Crash was kinda worthy. |

Greeneyes, the film's strength should be considered when giving out acting awards? I am curious as to why you feel that way. If anything good actors can make a mediocre script better, but rarely can a good script make bad actors better. Again, just curious. The Oscars often leave me perplexed (Like Titanic over LA Confidential) but the lobbying that goes on in the trades is amazing so who knows what factors go in. Are there any voters out here on MOL? My god-mother was a voter and we used to see the stuff they would send to votes, all but trying to buy their vote. Heck when the SAG ballots went out this year I got a copy of Crash in the mail so I could watch it and be able to vote for it.

Duncan- To be honest, I think writing and acting are equally important- sometimes a good-but-not great actor can rise even higher because of the material. "Titanic" was my breaking point with the Oscars- I stopped watching the complete show and just surf now. L.A. Confidential and Good Will Hunting were both far superior, but the epic was too good for business for voters to pass up. George Clooney is such a disengenious wad- just accept the damn statue and stop running for Mayor of Hollywood! |

I saw all five Best Pic nominees. I would have ranked them: 5. Munich 4. Good Night 3. Crash 2. Capote 1. Brokeback Although, Brokeback & Capote were close (IMHO); either would have been good picks. I thought that Ledger had it locked up until I saw Capote; Hoffman was great. |

I was a little disappointed in Jon Stewart - I'm a big fan but he seemed very nervous at first. The wins were very predictable until the end. My favorite part was when the rap song won - it shook up a rather sleepy show. I did love Jon's comment about Martin Scorcese and the 316 Mafia. What was up with the woman writer from Brokeback - she looked like she'd they'd just handed her a piece of smelly crap on a stick. I'm afraid the Crash song /interpretive dance is going to go down in Oscar history right beside Rob Lowe's famous number - it was like something from SNL. Very happy Crash won best picture. |

I can take or leave the song, but "Hustle & Flow" is worth seeing. A very realistic portrayal of a drug dealer in my former home town of Memphis, well acted by Terrence Howard. |

"Crash" as Best Picture?? That was a shock. I thought Brokeback Mountain had that locked-up I never understood the logic of how a picture can have the best director but not be the best picture. I feel like they go together. Has a movie ever been nominated for Best Picture and not Best Director (or vice versa)? It seems like they're saying to Ang Lee "You did the best directing job on a movie that wasn't the best movie' and that CRASH was the best movie even though it wasn't directed very well. |

For several years, Kathleen "Bird" York, co-composer of the song from "Crash", has been a hidden treasure (at least perhaps until last night). Her acting chops have been noted for her "West Wing" work, but she's also a great songwriter (Check out her "Wicked Little High" or "What would Happen") with a riveting singing style. She also plays a mean guitar, and speaks in full sentences. I back up a block for most red-heads anyhow, but she's something quite special.

Years ago every Spielberg film was nominated for best picture but not for best director. Some potential hints of logic: 1. Everyone votes for best picture but only directors vote for "achievement in directing," the official title of that award. So the voter pools are different. 2. A film could be well directed but not otherwise phenomenal. Cf. "Touch of Evil." 3. Or there could be no logic to it. |

Duncan, I don't think the merits of a film should be used in voting for an acting performance. I think history shows that a good solid performance in a mediocre film doesn't win Oscars |

A good solid performance shouldn't win an Oscar (not to mince words)... An outstanding performance should, and it shouldn't matter what success, critical or box office, the film has enjoyed. IMNSHO |

The problem with Crash is that Matt Dillin's character redeems his racist self by saving a black woman's life. Nice, feel good film and nothing more than that. As for Jon Stewart's performance, I think he should have been his usual political animal rather than trying to crack lame jokes to keep everyone happy. The writing wasn't really funny. |

Mustt_mustt- Just because he saved the black woman he was rascist to, and nearly raped, it doesn't mean he redeemed himself. In HIS eyes he did, and probably some of the viewers, but by all means just because he rescued her from a nearly fatal car crash it doesn't make up for his previous actions towards her. I guess it was all interpretive. :/

I liked the oversize bow on the shoulder of Charlize Theron's long black dress. (Full disclosure: I have a weakness for bows--on other people, and buildings. I esp. like the big red bow that wraps the Cartier building at Christmastime.) Charlize is tall and wore the dress well, and the design just seemed so witty and French to me. I really liked two other dresses as well. Felicity Huffington's was also black, but the energy was un-bowlike. No poofs of fabric for Felicity. It had a cumberbund (sp?) type wrapped waist, a wrapped bodice with a V neckline, and a long skirt with a V slit. Very geometic abstraction. Not French, I don't think. The wrappping wasn't cinch-y or mannish. It was a very feminine dress, thanks to good tailoring. The other one I liked was on a costume designer--an American--who accepted the award for best costumes, for the Geisha movie. It was also all black, the better to focus the eye on the wrapping. She was definitely working a kimono/origami theme, but rang some changes on it. What an artist. P.S. She appeared to be a regular human, with a not perfect shape, and she still looked very good in that ambitious dress. Very encouraging for the rest of us.

The dresses: Charlize Theron - stunningly gorgeous woman, ugly dress and hair that night. I am never impressed with the dresses in general. What is with the trains? Rachel W. most noteworthy because so lovely and elegant. Crash: I thought that it was a good movie. Best? I liked Capote and Good Night better. Regarding Crash - it seemed to me that the most troubled characters found some level of redemption, whereas the better people, like the Don Cheadle character as well as the blonde male cop, found more pain. George Clooney: class act, funny, good looking and intelligent. Lauren Bacall: I have seen her interviewed in recent years and she is wonderful. I felt badly for her, never saw her stumble with speaking before. The song: Cannot believe that song won. But I just don't get hip hop anyway. Other songs were ok. Dolly is lovable but very very scary looking. Brokeback Mountain: Read the short story. Love Annie Proulx. Hesitate to see movie because always hated cowboy movies. Walk the Line: Hesitate to see that too because even tho she is probably terrific actress, I find Reese W. to be very annoying. |

What were they thinking with that horrific set! It looked like it was designed by people from QVC... The "Crash" song number was one of the most absurd things I've seen on the Oscars. More so than previous years, this year's Oscar day (the red carpet, the show, post-show) was a dance/battle between Hollywood denizens who are trying to have them and their work taken seriously, and a nation drunk on celebrity culture who's most interested in getting close to the idols' dresses...so that we can rip into them (a la "The Day of the Locusts.")

Surprised no one mentioned Columbia High School alumni Teresa Wright during the Oscar's. She was recognized for the actors/actresses/ producers etc who passed away in 2005. http://www.reelclassics.com/Actresses/Teresa/teresa-bio.htm
She died March 6, 2005 at the age of 86. Her portrayal of Carol Beldon in MRS. MINIVER (1942), her second film won her an Oscar. This alum won 3 Academy nominations! |
