I moved from Maplewood to a pretty classless town and a few pioneering friends and I are taking on the charge of forming an arts committee to bring some culture to the community. We have no money yet so putting together a first event is going to be somewhat of a struggle. Does anyone have any ideas of free entertainment? Students? etc. We have access to a theater of sorts and perhaps a gallery.
Thanks.

If you have access to a gallery, do a salon show of local artists... maybe even a juried show (with an entry fee). If they sell anything split the costs 75/25% - your committee keeps the 25 as seed money to fund other ventures.

Where is this "classless town"?

Using students is an option, but make sure they're good. The first event will set the tone for the series.

It's down in Monmouth County. Keansburg.
Good point. Do you know of any schools with good music departments that we can contact?

If we have a salon show, can you sell at a non-profit event?

Is New Brunswick far from you? The Mason Gross School of Performing at Rutgers is good. I have a pianist friend in the DMA program, and he's excellent.

How far is Princeton? You may find some singers at Westminster Choir College.

Good luck!

Indy or classic or artsy films might work.
