From this week's Time Out NY http://www.timeoutnykids.com/music/11/w11.mar29.x.mu.lede.html WBGO 88.3 FM really wants young people get in tune with jazz music—and to prove it, the Newark-based radio station is hosting a month-long series of free concerts for kids and teens (grown-ups are invited, too, provided they have a tot in tow). The Children’s Jazz Concert Series kicks off on April 1, with subsequent concerts every Saturday through the end of the month. This weekend’s inaugural show features Afro-Latin jazz star Arturo O’Farrill, director of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, playing with his Latin Jazz Quintet. And the concert’s not even in Jersey; it’s in Brooklyn! Free, quality music that’s a mere train ride away? We’re all ears. Of course, if you happen to live closer to our neighboring state than you do to Prospect Heights, you’ll be happy to learn that on Sunday 2, O’Farrill heads for Maplewood, New Jersey, where he and his band will perform the tasty sounding program Arroz con Bebop in the Maplewood Kids Concerts series. All ages. Sat 1 at 3pm; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Pkwy, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (718-638-5000, www.brooklynmuseum.org). Subway: 2, 3 to Eastern Pkwy–Brooklyn Museum. For series information, call 973-624-8880 or visit www.wbgo.org. Sat 2 at 2pm. Woman’s Club of Maplewood, 60 Woodland Road, Maplewood (http://www.maplewoodkidsconcerts.com). Travel: For directions, click here. $15, children $11. |

I don't think WBGO has anything to do with the Maplewood show. |

Thanks Dave - you are correct in that they are two separate shows, WBGO has nothing to do with the Maplewood Show. Perhaps one day if I get some major underwriting or financial support such as public radio does, I'll be able to produce shows for free, but until then... |

Amy, my daughter went with friends to the Zanes show and had a blast. We're going to the Sunday show as well. Thanks for doing this for the community. Maybe next year... They Might Be Giants? |

Dave, thanks for your kind words - glad your daughter and her friends had fun! TMBG are awesome, but too expensive to do at the Woman's Club without charging a high ticket price. Perhaps if it becomes the Microsoft Maplewood Kids Concert Series... |
