HA! Maybe I'll compete. I'm sure the younger kids will beat me with flip tricks, though. My most unique trick is the ollie airwalk and judo air off the little launch ramp. What are the prizes? Do you have age catagories? |

Sorry, I'm confused. It starts at 11 or 1? At the skatepark or the shop. It might be fun for my 7.5 and 5.5 year olds to watch. |

The demo is at 1pm at the skatepark. If you want to compete, go to the shop at 11am to sign up. Wendy - if you're there, it will be nice to finally meet you. I'll be the tall guy with a 3 year old.

sorry I missed the demo - my son wanted to read Curious George books instead. I tried, but he really didn't want to go. Oh well.... How did it go? Post pictures and/or video if possible. |

Awesome event. My 6 year old loved watching everyone skate. The guys from 5boronyc did a great job and all of the competitors were good as well. |

Thanks to everyone who came out today - it was a blast! Steve Rodriguez and the guys from 5B were really impressed with the level of skating our locals turned out - they can't wait to come back and do it again! All the finalists were from SOMA - the winner, from Maplewood. BIG thanks also to the Maplewood First Aid Squad and the Maplewood Police Department. You guys are the best...

Marie: Thanks for a great event (and for feeding everyone at the shop afterwards!). The guys from 5boro were incredible--not just really good skaters, but really really nice people. I watched one of them talking with real interest with a 12 year old about go-karts, and then try to hook this kid up with another kid who he thought might be interested in them as well. Every single one of the guys was down to earth, and treated the kids with great respect and sincerity. Not the typical picture one might have of skater culture. My kids were impressed with the skating, but far more impressed with how decent the pros were--they remarked on it all night. Great role models. Thanks for bringing them to SO/M. Can't wait for the next event. Mark |

Mark, You're welcome - it really is my pleasure. Your son had a lot of guts to get out there and compete against the "older" guys. The guys from 5B have already promised to do a "blowout" demo this summer with all the rest of the 5B team members who couldn't make it yesterday. The next event will be with Sureshot & Stimulus Skateboard Companies. I should have a date for that event later this week - will keep you posted. Thanks for the support, Marie

Cool. I'm really bummed I missed it. Hopefully next time... What did the 5boro team think of the skatepark? Did they say anything? |

Composerjohn, They thought the ramps should be spaced farther apart and it should be resurfaced. Other than that, they enjoyed skating it - as their team manager said: "they'll skate anything you put in front of them." Hopefully, we'll be able to upgrade to a better surface and space the equiptment out when it's relocated this summer to its new location in Memorial Park.

Yeah Marie! Yeah Maplewood SkatePark Committee! Yeah Transcend! One more thing that Marie forgot to mention. The 5Boro guys were quite impressed with the quality of skaters we have in our community. You go guys! (and were there any girls? if not let's get that working too, right?) |

Wendy, I posted the following in a previous post: "Steve Rodriguez and the guys from 5B were really impressed with the level of skating our locals turned out." Just so there's no confusion, the Maplewood Skate Park Committee didn't have anything to do with this event. The event was sponsored solely by Transcend Skate Shop. If the MSPC or anyone else for that matter, would like to make a contribution to the next event, I will GLADLY accept one to help defray the costs. Professional skateboarders can eat a lot of Jamaican Beef Patties! The team is also, paid per appearance. There were girls in attendence, but no girls skating at this event - 5B does have one female on their team, but she wasn't able to make it this time around. Hopefully, she will be at the summer demo and the several girls who skate at the Y Launch and Grind classes will be comfortable enough and skilled enough by then to compete. I suspect the Mia Hamm of the Skateboarding World is out there - it's just a matter of time before she rises through the ranks... |

My mention of the Maplewood Skate Park Committee was because they raised the money for the skate park, as you know, being a former member as I was too. I don't think the Committee really exists anymore since we've done what we set out to do: raising money to purchase ramps, rails and a hockey rink and being proactive about getting them placed in appropriate locations. Given that, there is no money left, no treasurer I would assume. In any event I posted to reiterate or add to things to cheer about. That much I hope was clear. |
