Some notable new purchases.

Hamell on Trial-Songs for Parents who Enjoy Drugs-What a title. Actually a song cycle about how to raise a child in these crazy days. Stay away if yer a fan of W. Hamell's unbelieveble live, 1 man and a guitar. He puts out as much energy as the Who live. Catch him if you can.

Little Willies- Nora Jones side project with Jim Campilongo (amazing telecaster player) and Richard Julian (great somgwriter). Kinda countryish. loads of fun, especially the song about Lou Reed cow tipping.

Dave Gilmour-On an Island-Not a big fan of Pink Floyd but this is a beautiful album. Some of his best guitar playing.

Derek Trucks Band-Songlines-He keeps on getting better and better. Cd starts with a Roland Kirk tune and then goes into R & B and Indian grooves. heard he's touring with Clapton this summer who will be covering Derek and the Dominoes material. Derek (naturally) will be playing Duane's parts.

Caetano Veloso- Noites Do Norte-Beautiful recording. Got hooked when I heard the song, Michelangelo Antonioni on the soundtrack of Eros.

Belle and Sebastion-Life Pursuit-Great Pop.

Bill Evans-Complete Vanguard Sessions- Not much to say. Great music.

Yer turn>

Not a lot recently. I did download 10 Years acoustic Ep, that I like a lot. Plus another Keb Mo album, Keep it Simple.

I listened to some of the track clips of David Gilmour, nothing really made me want to buy the album, but I did like the sound of Red Sky at Night...love that sax !

I bought the new JAMES HUNTER CD entitled "People Gonna Talk." I like it alot after 2 spins. (I always say y'gotta listen to a CD 3X before you can really know if you like it...) Very 50s R&B, Jackie Wilson type stuff. Strange, compelling, sexy, groovy. Worth the $15.00 I paid for it at Tower.

Also, continuing my collecting of Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks CDs with DP's "Slow Dancing with the Moon" and GB's "Fresh Horses." I love Dolly, she's amazing. Brilliant. And a very funny individual. I heard somone ask her how long it takes to get her hair ready and she said "I have no idea, I'm never there."

Speaking of country music, I just got Rick Moranis's "The Agoraphobic Cowboy" and it's well, it's a fun little trifle but there's not much there there if you know what I mean. NOT worth the $14 I paid for it.

Lastly, I got a used copy of the re-mastered SKECTCHES OF SPAIN. I always loved Concierto and am looking for a copy of Jim Hall's version. The Miles/Gil Evans is a bit overwrought but it suggests a great place in time.

Ukie, I also got that Derek Trucks CD and it's growing on me. Anyone who kicks it off with a Rhasaan Roland Kirk is okay in my book.

And, yeah, Pooppi, James Hunter does have a Sam Cook sound. I've been listening to that CD all weekend and I like it very much.

Anyone been listening to the newish Sinead O'Connor reggae CD?

I have to say, I haven't been as taken with a new rekkid in a long time as I am with this James Hunter CD "People Gonna Talk." Apparently he toured and recorded with Van the Man and there is alot of Van's love of early R&B in it, as well as, as Pippolini pointed out, a strong Sam Cook influence, plus some Jackie Wilson. I realize now, after multiple listenings that the baritone sax really adds alot to the sound. Van, who is a big Jackie Wilson fan, always had alto on his tunes, this has a few horns but the bari gives it a distinctive R&B sound. Do czech it oot, mon.

You can hear good samples on his website. Try this link:

http://www.jameshuntermusic.com/epk/

I got tix to see him April 20th at Mo Pitkins on the Lower East Side but I may not be able to go...

I'm a little disappointed with Donald Fagen's new "Morph the Cat." The concepts are great, and the melodies, chord changes and arrangements are more of that Fagen sound I love. But I just can't listen to this guy sing any more. His weird sound and delivery was still cool on Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" but at this point I just wish he would find a good vocalist to sing his songs for him. And the mixes have gone so far into the "smooth" realm that they just don't grab me. I need a something with a little more bite. In spite of this album's strengths, I have to give it a score of 3 out of 5.

Soulful Mr. T, I bet you went to Amoeba, I always get a lot of great stuff there when I'm in San Fran.

New Flaming Lips CD is really good, so good I can't pry it away from my son.

Just got the new Calexico record, didn't grab me by the scruff of the neck but I gotta feeling it's a grower.

New Elvis Costello record with the Metropole Orkest is terrific, there's nothing this guy can't do.

Last week on the way back from San Francisco, I met Peter Rowan (Earth Opera, Seatrain, Old and in the Way, Bill Monroe, etc.) on the plane, what a nice guy. He noticed I was reading Kafka on the Shore by Murakami and told me it was one of his favorite books (and after finishing it this weekend, I can say the same). He was playing The Turning Point in Piermont NY with Tony Rice this week but it was sold out. Noticed he did a record with Rice that I ordered , can't wait to give that a listen. For those who don't know, Tony Rice is probably the best bluegrass style flatpicker there is.

Richard Julian-AM New York- Great songs, great playing and a really beautiful recording of expertly played acoustic instruments.
