If you think of him as the host of "Hee Haw," you're missing out on one of the top acts of the 1960s, who stormed out of Bakersfield bringing a driving force to country music ("...like a freight train coming through your livingroom," as Buck said). He capped it with a nice late career: duets with Dwight Yoakam, continuing his singing after losing part of his tongue to esophageal cancer, and even performing at his own Crystal Palace the night before he died in his sleep. One of the great song titles ever: "I Wouldn't Live in New York City (If They Gave Me the Whole Dang Town)."
