Please attend this fabulous CHS event, presented at Maplewood Middle School's auditorium, celebrating the talents of our CHS Music Students an honoring Mozart: The Mozart Requiem Presented by the Columbia High School Chamber Orchestra & Choir In honor of the 250th Anniversary of Mozart's Birth Wednesday, April 5th, 7:30pm (Free Admission) Dr. James S. Imhoff Director Ms. Cheryl Tedesco Strings Mr. Peter Bauer Winds Daniel Baer Rehearsal Accompanist Music for voices, strings, and winds by W. A. Mozart and Bela Bartok Maplewood Middle School 7 Burnet Street Maplewood NJ SOLOISTS: Kristen Conrad Sara Donatelli Rebecca Adelson Julia Fendler Larissa Wohl Evan Johnston Matthew Lieberman Orren Saltzman Daniel Baer rehearsal accompanist In addition to the Requiem, the strings of the Chamber Orchestra will perform music by Mozart and Bartok, directed by Ms. Cheryl Tedesco. The wind players for the orchestra have been prepared by Mr. Peter Bauer. This concert could not have been presented without their leadership. We thank Mrs. Margaret Zufall Roberts, former director of the orchestra, for her planning and assistance in this endeavor. Months of rehearsal and drill went into the choral parts, with senior Daniel Baer at the piano accompanying, assisting, and supporting the singers. We also thank the staff and administration of Maplewood Middle School for their assistance in hosting the concert while renovations continue at the high school. The students of Columbia High School enjoy a tradition of excellence in the performing arts. Theater and dance as well as music have been an important part of the academic experience for the young adults of Maplewood and South Orange. Dr. James S. Imhoff, CHS Director of Choral Activities, has been on the faculty of the University of Oregon, the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, and Montclair State. He has served as a guest conductor and clinician in numerous venues including Seattle, Toronto, and Syracuse, and has presented research papers in Vienna, Austria and Bergen, Norway. Dr. Imhoff is extremely proud of the dedication, skill, and love of music demonstrated by the marvelous students of this community and of Columbia High School. In a collection of the letters of Mozart by Hans Mersmann, the final entry in a listing of events in Mozart’s life reads: 1791 The Requiem composed but not completed The thought that a work of such power and drama can be “incomplete” has been intolerable to musicians over the past 250 years. Any performance of this work must stand as a monumental work of art, including the first performance of the completed fragments a few days after Mozart’s death, the first performance as completed by Mozart’s student Sussmayr in 1792, and our performance tonight, April 5, 2006. The details of this work are shrouded in mystery and legend, including one scenario that would have the dying composer singing through the alto part with his friends, another that has a rival composer, Salieri, poisoning Mozart and stealing the score, and another, more realistic, that has his frantic and impoverished wife Costanze struggling to get the score completed so she could collect the commission. The version we present tonight is based on the score published in 1799 by Breitkopf & Hartel of Weisbaden. It includes passages in the master’s own hand as well as completions and some original music by Sussmayr. We have also chosen some movements at the expense of others due to limitations in rehearsal time, orchestration, balance, and logistics. But you will hear—and we sincerely hope be moved by—music of a sublime and profound nature. www.CHSMPA.org |

If you weren't there last night, you missed a fantastic performance! Kudos to all the talented students and dedicated music department faculty for a very enjoyable evening. I only wish that more of the community could witness what great things come out of CHS. |

I'm a semi-professional singer and have sung stuff like this almost all my life. My wife is a professional singer and has done this work. We are rehearsing to do our own performance with Harmonium next month. All that is to say that I have high standards for my kids, and last night, the chorus and orchestra far exceeded them. My wife and I were blown back in our seats. As my younger daughter would say, I'm not even kidding. This is Dr. Imhoff's fourth year here, and this is the first "great work" he has done. I believe his other concerts have been wide mixtures of songs. I think he has risen the bar considerably by pulling this off. They didn't do the entire requiem but the majority. And they did it with only about 30 singers. Very ambitious.

I took my middle schooler becuse I wanted him to see what awaits him with the CHS music program. It was just an awesome performance from everyone. The soloists were fabulous, the orchestra did a great job with hard music and the chorus sounded golden. I knew none of the performers personally but enjoyed them all immensely. I adore the Requiem and listen to it often and was just a little concerned beforehand that I wouldn't be enthralled to hear it from high schoolers when I regularly have the Muti recording playing in my head. Foolish to worry though, I just sat there with tears running down my cheeks in awe at the sheer beauty of the performance. What an out standing performance and group of young musicians. A great big THANK YOU to all who worked on and contributed to this event. |

I agree the concert was wonderful. Kudos to Dr. Imhoff, especially since he is retiring this year. He went out with a bang! |
