Festival stunk. Just got home. Too nice a day and they have screenings in multiple locations at the same time. I was really disappointed in how they handled it this year. Williamstown still stands out as the single best festival I have attended in the last year. If I can talk the producer out of using that Melissa Etheridge song at the end of the film, I could find it distribution this week. So frustrating not to have made her understand why she needed to rethink that choice. Time for some guitar on the steps.

I went to the festival on Sat. night. The seats at the convention center site were uncomfortable. There was a bare light bulb at the edge of the screen that took away some of the contrast from the film The location of the various films was not clear. I went to see a particular film and was told it would be at the convention center. I missed it because it was at the bowling alley instead. ---yes, the bowling alley. Plastic seats, stale smoke. Yes, the bowling alley. When I checked the web site, it seemed a fun way to spend time seeing several entries for a set fee. After my experience in Asbury Park, I will do some serious thinking before deciding to attend next year's event. I wonder how many other people will not be back.

John. Do you mind if I cut and paste your post in an email to the director. I know the festival director well and had much the same experience you did, except I knew where my film was screening. But I think it would be helpful to her to understand that, in some cases, less is more. This year the festival had too much going on at too many different venues and your criticism points directly to that problem. Private Line me or post here to let me know. I would, of course, keep you anonymous if you so desired. |

This is a comment in general about festivals and contests. It uses the Garden State Film Festival as an example. Contests at festivals could be opportunities to educate people about the fine points of their area of interest. In the G.S.F.F., evaluation forms were distributed. Audience members had the opportunity to check their level of approval from 1 - 5 on the film they viewed. Audiences are not sophisticaed about the intricacies of criteria to evaluate an entry. At the film festival, the audience could have been given a paper with explanations of such areas as continuity, photography, directorship, script and maybe two or three more. The films could have been given evaulations in each category. Thus the audience could not only learn about the particulars of certain endeavors but might even be challenged to take part. |

Amen John. I produced a film festival for four years and now, being on the other side of the table, as it were, am all to aware of the failures of some festivals and the huge successes of others. The Williamstown Film Festival was one of the best events for filmmakers and attendees of the dozen or so I went to this year, followed closely by Woods Hole.
