What follows are 1998 and 2000 "All-Time Top 100 Albums" lists. First, my snarky commentary: Radiohead? Who are they? REM? C'mon... Air Moon? Stereophonics? What is this, a joke? Not a single Grateful Dead rekkid here. Live/Dead? Workingmans Dead? Puh-leeeze. Lots of Pink Floyd but no "Big Pink?" No "Steppin' Out?" "Trout Mask" is here but no "Hot Rats" or "Freak Out?" You ever try to listen to "Trout Mask Replica?" I'd rather have a tooth pulled. Plus, I like "Beggars Banquet" more than "Exile On Main Street." No country rekkids? No Willie or Waylon? No Latin rekkids (Ruben Blades' "Buscando America?" No Hector Lavoe? No Mario Bauza?). I think the "glyph" CD is Prince's best. Jazz CDs? "Kind of Blue," of course, the easy choice. Oh, yeah, "A Love Supreme" is low on one list. Where's "My Favotite Things?" or "The Bridge?" or "Mingus Ah Um?" No Ellington at all?? No Ella? No Louis Armstrong? Sheesh! Fela Kuti? Y'ssou Ndour? Anyone else from Africa, Asia, Latin America? I think one of the most overlooked rekkids of all time is Coati Mundi's "The Former 12 Year Old Genius," apparently not yet available on CD. Anyone heard it? Anyone HAVE it? Blah, blah, blah.... What other rekkids is missing? 2000 list 1 Beatles, The Revolver 1966 2 Radiohead, The Bends 1995 3 Beatles, The Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967 4 Radiohead, OK Computer 1997 5 Beatles, The The Beatles (White Album) 1968 6 R.E.M., Automatic For The People 1992 7 Dylan, Bob Blood On The Tracks 1975 8 Beatles, The Abbey Road 1969 9 Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon 1973 10 Smiths, The The Queen Is Dead 1986 11 Stone Roses, The The Stone Roses 1989 12 Love, Forever Changes 1968 13 Velvet Underground, The The Velvet Underground + Nico 1967 14 Davis, Miles Kind Of Blue 1959 15 U2 The Unforgettable Fire 1984 16 Morrison, Van Astral Weeks 1968 17 Nirvana, Nevermind 1991 18 Beach Boys, The Pet Sounds 1966 19 Prince, Sign 'O' The Times 1987 20 Springsteen, Bruce Born To Run 1975 21 Oasis (What's The Story) Morning Glory? 1995 22 Beatles, The A Hard Day's Night 1964 23 Bowie, David Hunky Dory 1971 24 Mitchell, Joni Blue 1971 25 U2, The Joshua Tree 1987 26 Dylan, Bob Highway 61 Revisited 1965 27 Bowie, David The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust 1972 28 Massive Attack, Blue Lines 1991 29 Sex Pistols, The Never Mind The Bollocks 1977 30 Pink Floyd, The Wall 1979 31 Fleetwood Mac, Rumours 1977 32 Hendrix, Jimi Electric Ladyland 1968 33 Dylan, Bob Blonde On Blonde 1966 34 Beatles, The Rubber Soul 1965 35 Rolling Stones, The Exile On Main Street 1972 36 U2, Achtung Baby 1991 37 Clash, The London Calling 1979 38 Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here 1975 39 Gaye, Marvin, What's Going On 1971 40 Rolling Stones, The Let It Bleed 1969 41 Portishead, Dummy 1994 42 Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin IV 1971 43 Simon, Paul Graceland 1986 44 Oasis, Definitely Maybe 1994 45 Band, The The Band (Brown Album) 1969 46 Doors, The The Doors 1967 47 Bowie, David Low 1977 48 Who, The Who's Next 1971 49 R.E.M., Out Of Time 1991 50 Captain Beefheart, Trout Mask Replica 1969 51 Morissette, Alanis Jagged Little Pill 1995 52 Who, The Tommy 1969 53 Television Marquee Moon 1977 54 Beck Odelay 1996 55 Drake, Nick Five Leaves Left 1969 56 Smiths, The The Smiths 1984 57 Blondie Parallel Lines 1978 58 Reed, Lou Transformer 1972 59 Leftfield Leftism 1995 60 Marley, Bob Legend 1984 61 Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin 1969 62 Young, Neil After The Goldrush 1970 63 Hendrix, Jimi Are You Experienced? 1967 64 Jackson, Michael Thriller 1982 65 My Bloody Valentine Loveless 1991 66 Simon & Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water 1970 67 Eagles, The Hotel California 1976 68 Air Moon, Safari 1998 69 Stereophonics, Performance And Cocktails 1999 70 Pearl Jam Ten 1991 71 Morrison, Van Saint Dominic's Preview 1972 72 Prince Purple Rain 1984 73 Amos, Tori Little Earthquakes 1992 74 King, Carole Tapestry 1971 75 Travis The Man Who 1999 76 Smashing Pumpkins, The Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness 1995 77 Björk Debut 1993 78 Corrs, The Talk On Corners 1998 79 Morrison, Van Moondance 1970 80 Crowded House Woodface 1991 81 Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin II 1969 82 Gabriel, Peter So 1986 83 Crosby Stills & Nash Crosby Stills & Nash 1968 84 Rolling Stones, The Sticky Fingers 1971 85 Coltrane, John A Love Supreme 1964 86 John, Elton Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 1973 87 Bush, Kate Hounds Of Love 1985 88 Metallica Metallica (Black Album) 1991 89 Wonder, Stevie Songs In The Key Of Life 1976 90 Redding, Otis Otis Blue - Otis Redding Sings Soul 1965 91 Police, The Synchronicity 1983 92 Public Enemy It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back 1988 93 Young, Neil Harvest 1972 94 Cure, The Disintegration 1989 95 Blur Parklife 1994 96 Queen A Night At The Opera 1975 97 Beastie Boys, The Licensed To Ill 1986 98 Moby Grape Moby Grape 1967 99 Buckley, Jeff Grace 1994 100 Sinatra, Frank Songs For Swingin' Lovers 1955 1998 list 1 Beatles, The Revolver 1966 2 Beatles, The Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967 3 Beatles, The The Beatles (White Album) 1968 4 Nirvana, Nevermind 1991 5 Beatles, The Abbey Road 1969 6 Beach Boys, The Pet Sounds 1966 7 R.E.M. Where are these lists from? They're pretty obviously English, which would account for a lot of your complaints above. Personally, I find it hard to get worked up about these sorts of lists. Every person who reads it will think of some albums they believe should be on there, but to make room for those you'd have to bump stuff off that somebody else would complain about not being on there. |

Hard to please all the people all of the time. Incidentally, the R.E.M. albums listed are certainly not even the best of R.E.M.'s discography. So right there, I can tell you the lists are fundamentally flawed. Same goes for U2. |

Yeah, these things are usually suspect, but that one got me right off the bat: Radiohead at No.2... OF ALL TIMES! Yeah right, OK thanks, no need to read further. |

The NME did one of these earlier this year and put the Arctic Monkeys' debut at No. 5 of all time. I mean, the Arctic Monkeys album wouldn't even make my list of the 100 best albums released so far this year. But that's what these English mags do. Part of it is an attempt to be deliberately provocative and part of it is pandering to their very young readers. But it's certainly not worth getting worked up over. |

I swear that London Calling was #1 on the Rolling Stone list the last time I looked. I remember it because I thought it was ballsy and a good call when I saw it. And just for the record...I LOVE THE BEATLES and give them all due respect historically but must every best list have like 5 of the top 10 albums be Beatles albums? And then have their entire collection in the list? Fine, I get it, the Beatles rock. I agree. But c'mon now. |

The Rolling Stone list is way better, but still - I agree with Alley's point, and I would add to that comment the Rolling Stones. |

I think Wenner has a particular dislike of anything smelling of prog rock. They hate Pink Floyd, too (save for the inexplicable five-star review of The Final Cut by Kurt Loder). No Radiohead, Dark Side at 43. |

Let's look at this another way. Has anybody put together a string of four albums as good as the Rolling Stones? Beggar's Banquet (12/6/68) Let It Bleed (12/5/69) Sticky Fingers (4/23/71) Exile on Main Street (4/12/72) The intervening records are a greatest hits (Through the Past, Darkly) and a live album (Get Yer Ya=Ya's Out). |

I find these too annoying so I try not to get caught up. That said, IOS, while I agree that NME are hyperbolic, have you listened to "Whatever They Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" by you-know-who all the way through? More than once? I assume you have from reading your post but I wanted to be sure and to ask you for your opinion/review of the "album" or as T likes to say "rekkid"...;-D Be well and listen well, all. David |

All the way through? Absolutely. All the way through more than once? Probably not. It was a real chore to make it through the first time. I think their lyrics can be entertaining (although Mike Skinner does a similar thing much better), but musically it's a tough slog. All of the songs sound the same, and the lack of strong melodies and dynamics mean it gets really old really fast. They definitely seem promising, but the album is mediocre at best. And it's interesting how little buzz there is about them now that the initial wave of hype has subsided. I think their dismal SNL appearance might have killed their chances in the U.S. |

Dave23, you are most perceptive about the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Al Green is twice as good as Marvin Gaye, but I don't think a list should include "greatest hits" compilations, at least from the LP era. Perhaps that's a little unfair to genres that don't generally organize music around the album concept (or perhaps I should say, concept album). |

About Al Green. If greatest hits rekkids can be on the list, they should have picked Al Green Greatest Hits Vol. II. Not Vol. I. What were they thinking. |

I always though that Paul Simon's Rhythm Of The Saints was his best effort. It's more interesting than Graceland and has a real lush sound. Unfotunately the record company screwed up and forced him to change the order to sell more singles. Try listening in Paul's order next time and you should notice a much more cohesive cd. I've never gone back to the original order. I burned myself a new one in this order and it's the one I always put on. 3. The Coast 6. She Moves On 4. Proof 7. Born At The Right Time 8. Cool, Cool River 1. The Obvious Child 2. Can't Run But 9. Spirit Voices 5. Further To Fly 10. Rhythm Of The Saints
