A few years ago I heard some "unreleased" Buddy Holly songs on NPR. I regret not writing down any of the info, but here's what I remember: They were essentially demos recorded in his living room not long before he died. They were distinctly darker than his popular material. And they were great.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

NPR has a good archive of their stories -

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1496872

Quote:

Holly made another set of tapes in the living room of his New York apartment just weeks before he died. Buddy Holly fan Dale Lawrence, who has heard these still-unreleased songs, tells their tale. Lawrence says the living-room recordings come across as perhaps the strongest -- certainly the most personal -- music of Holly's career.

I wonder where in NYC he lived. Never thought of NYC as a Buddy Holly town.
So
There is no way to get this music? Sounds like good stuff.

Thanks Nohero. I'll listen to the story when I get a chance. (Addicted to Last.fm right now.) If it's the same story I heard before, it includes lengthy outtakes.

I think he lived in the Village but don't quote me.

Dave,
I believe the demos you're talking about are the Dec. 1958 and Jan. 1959 demos he recorded at home. I think they are (include?):
THAT'S WHAT THEY SAY
WHAT TO DO
PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED
THAT MAKES IT TOUGH
CRYING WAITING HOPING
LEARNING THE GAME
WAIT TILL THE SUN SHINES NELLIE
SLIPPIN' & SLIDIN
DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS
DEAREST
LOVE IS STRANGE
SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ
It's probably gonna be impossible to find an album/cd with all his demos WITHOUT OVERDUB. You best bet is to to NYC and check some CD bootlegs in the Village stores(I had most these demos on an LP some years ago, they are bound to be on a CD bootleg).
I don't know, your other choice might be the extended CD of the "Reminiscing" album (the edition WITH the extra tracks - 18 total, NOT just 11). It has a few of these demos (of course overdubbed), and the extra tracks have a few other tunes without overdubs.
Was the track you heard just Buddy & his guitar or did it gave bass and drums?

OK, darn it, now you got me going Dave... there you go... call rec. stores in NYC or check eBay, the internet, etc. and look for these boots:

"Apartment Demos" Dynamite Studio Rec. DS92JO22

"11 FIFTH AVENUE - The Apartment Tapes" Prism Rec.

"The Famous Apartment Tapes and Rarities" Nor Va Jak Rec. NVJ822

Nohero,

That was the show. Thanks much. I recall listening to it at night on Millburn Ave while my food from Tinga cooled, utterly transfixed (and frustrated by the short outtakes).

Jazzme,

You rock. When you have 8 minutes, listen to the show that Nohero linked to above. It addresses much of what you mention. The outtakes are sans overdubs. The narrator mentioned a box set called "What You Been A-Missin'". The NPR site also has 3 songs from that session. They have an intimacy and immediacy that reminds me, strangely enough, of Syd Barrett.

Dave.

The box set you mention is a classic bootleg, but it's 5 CD set (sometimes 4 CDs), and most of it is a lot of rare stuff that you probably won't be interested in - live recordings, interviews, 1/3 party covers, oddities, etc. - plus it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

Go for the CDs I listed for you - they are single CDs, they have all the demos you're looking for, and they will cost you less (if you get another one, just make sure whatever CD you get has all the demos, not just the 1959 ones).

WANT IT EASY?!?!? OK, go for it on eBay: there you go, I found the perfect one for you... at $15 it's a real bargain and you get all of the "apartment demos" without overdub...... Isn't life beautiful!!!!

He moved to New York after his England tour and married the receptionist at his label there, maybe early 1958. He went on the Winter Dance Party tour of the midwest in the fall of 1958 and died February 1959.
