“Jazz & Film: Blues Piano” – an evening of live jazz and concert film clips - will be held on Friday April 21, 2006, at 8 p.m. at Maplewood Memorial Library - Main Branch, 51 Baker St. Maplewood. Admission is $10 per person (donation). Seating is limited, so reservations are recommended – call (973) 477-4229. The second in a three-part series, Jazz & Film is presented by Maplewood Community Music in conjunction with the Maplewood Public Library. The event features live music throughout the evening led by Maplewood pianist, composer and educator Tricia Woods. Ms.Woods has extensive performing credentials, including touring internationally with Savion Glover in Bring in Da Noise Bring in Da Funk, appearing on CNN’s That’s Entertainment, and working extensively with New York City jazz groups such as Jeff Newell’s New Trad Octet and Hayes Greenfield’s Jazzamatazz. Ms. Woods is the author of two blues piano method books published by Alfred Publishing. She will perform with a rhythm section that includes drummer Lee Finkelstein, also from Maplewood They will perform tunes by Arnold Ammonds, Professor Longhair, Otis Spann, Pinetop Perkins, and more. Featured throughout will be film clips from concerts of these and other notable musicians. There will also be a short discussion period, plus free refreshments. Jazz & Film is presented by Maplewood Community Music, an organization dedicated to community music and service in Maplewood run by musical director Jim Buchanan and administrator Susan Dillon. The group includes a concert band, swing band (“Swing Town”), dixieland band (“Jackson Square”), and trombone choir. The organization also runs an instrumental music camp for local children each summer. It is run under the auspices of the Maplewood Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Jane Kennedy and Joanne Beckerich from the Maplewood Public Library have agreed to donate funds to Jazz & Film to pay for concert DVDs,which will be available to the public after the series events. Also,the library will be an educational resource for the event, providing supplementary reading lists. The next Jazz & Film event, a tribute to Louis Armstrong, is slated to take place this fall during Maplewood’s Jazz Weekend at the Burgdorff Cultural Center in Maplewood. |

FYI the last Jazz & Film event, held at 1978 back in February, was a tribute to great jazz vocalists featuring the outstanding chops of Richard Lanham. It was a fantastic show! |
