It sucks. After you get over the "ground breaking" fact that the're a polygomous family, you still need interesting characters. I just don't care WHAT happens to any of them. Bill Paxton's best work was in Weird Science.
Can you name the character? J.B. |

I'm a bit behind on the episodes - just watched the 4th one through OnDemand. You're right though - it's really not THAT compelling, but something keeps me coming back for more. It does seem like every episode is the same as the last - we get a glimpse of the troubles with Roman trying to get his hands on the business and Nikki's credit card/spending issues, Margine complains again about her baby weight, and Nikki thinks Jeanne Triplehorn's character (forget her name) has a higher standing than she. But, every episode goes into these issues without really "evolving." Why do I keep watching it???

I don't watch it only because I don't beleive that Chet could actually get those three babes to marry him. How about a greasy pork sandwich served on a dirty ashtray? |

I played lacrosse with a guy we alternatively called "toad" and "Chet" because he closely resembled the creature that Chet was turned into in the movie...lol! |

See how sucky this show is. I can't even get a thread about how bad it sucks to stay on topic! New Thread topic: Weird Science quotes: "The family jewels?!" |

Weird Science -- a classic!!! Big Love -- not so much!! I can't seem to like any of the characters, and even though I get that the show is supposed to be challenging and different, I just can't get into it. |

I'm a fan... I stay up past my "bedtime" on Sundays to watch it even though I tivo it too. I think it's intriguing, it holds my attention, and I personally like the story development. But to each his own, I suppose. |

I like it too. Can't explain why really. The whole idea of the polygamist relationship boggles the mind. Incomprehensible to me how the women put up with it. I like the juxtaposition of the different "types" of polygamist families. The Hendricksons are somewhat mainstream, well-to-do, civilized, while the senior Hendrickson is a complete wacko, and barely scrapes by in the wilds of Utah, and the whole "cult-like" aspect of Roman's group. Nikki is so easy to hate and sometimes pity, and yet we see glimmers of a decent person every now and then. Margene so young and lost and lonely (loneliness being something most SAHM's can appreciate--can't imagine having to keep a big family "secret" on top of everything else). The wierd relationship between Margene and the eldest son, being that they are practically the same age. My husband just admires all the sex Bill Paxton's character gets! |

I don't particularly like it either, but give it some time. The good shows build up. It took Six Feet Under eight episodes or so to find its footing. |

But Six Feet Under was interesting when it launched. There was this unreached potential. The writing was good, the characters were intriguing. The direction was obtuse but in a really interesting and different way. TS and I couldn't make it though the first episode of Big Love. I felt next to no sympathy for the Paxton character, and the premise seemed unplausible and uninteresting. |

I must respectfully disagree about Six Feet Under. That show was interesting (and even somewhat good) when it launched, but I distinctly remember the 4th episode - and the specifics thereof - was when I realized it was going to be an amazing show. Maybe Big Love will gain momentum. Maybe I would even give it another try. However, there is just something about the premise, the characters, the something that makes me cringe. Time is better spent elsewhere. |

I should add that I stopped watching Six Feet after the second or third episode, then picked it back up again after another four or so and realized it was going to be a great show. So I actually missed the point it turned the corner (when they dropped the fake commercials, among other things). |

I didn't care for the Six Feet Under pilot but eventually became a huge fan. I'm really enjoying Big Love. I like Bill Paxton in this role. Despite being such an "everyman" and everywhere, he is Bill Hendrickson to me. Bruce Dern is fantastic as his horribly sadistic but really funny father. The whole polygamy thing is interesting to me. There are many women I know who think life might be a bit easier were there another wife around! While I'm sure the fictionalized polygymous family is much dramatic than anything you might find in real life, it's interesting to see how what works (built-in daycare) and what doesn't (sleeping with your husband considered an "affair" because its not on the schedule.) It's like watching an American/HBO verision of "Raise the Red Latern" or something. There definitely is a soapy feel, but that's fine with me. I like it. Not as great as Six Feet Under, but I think it shares some of the sensibilities.

I like it. I've been DVR'ing it (TiVo'ing) to watch later in the week because my significant other thinks it's too soapy (although he too admires a man who can "handle" three wives). It's really growing on me. I was a little skeeved out at first too, but I'm past that and am appreciating it for its characters, plots, etc. I especially like the Barb and Margie characters, and the eldest teenage daughter who had the "nerve" to bring her mainstream friend over unannounced (the friend cracks me up). I hope this show sticks around. BTW, does anyone know when HBO is bringing back "The Wire"? Its last season ended more than a year ago, but no word on it yet. I pray it's coming back. |

"Little Village Lyrics: Big Love ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I need love as big as an ocean I need love that can't be crossed A love in perpetual motion I need a love that won't get lost Do you know where this love can be found? Do you know where this love can be found? Open up your eyes; take a look around Do you know where this love can be found? 'Cause I'm a full-grown man And I'm lookin' for a big love I need a love gonna move this mountain I need a love that I can't hide away I need a love gonna lift me up to that drinking fountain Just like my Daddy did in my younger days Now is this love gonna get up off the ground Is this love gonna get up off the ground I need a fifty-foot woman to wrap these arms around Is this love gonna get up off the ground 'Cause I'm a full-grown man And I'm looking for a big love I never did just a little drinking I could drink the Milky Way Think small and your heart starts shrinking I'm here to stay Got to have your big love I got to have it right away I need love as big as an ocean I need a love that can't be crossed I need love in perpetual motion I need a love that don't get lost 'Cause I'm a full-grown man And I'm looking for a big love" Great Song. Great band. The TV show's a great waste of time. -s.

The oldest daughter's friend is Deb from Napoleon Dynamite! I watch the show every week. It's entertaining, so I don't much care why. Polygamy is WAY too much work. There are a lot of great actors -- Harry Dean Stanton, Grace Zabriski as Bill's mom, Mary Kay Place, Bruce Dern, the actress who plays Bruce Dern's wife who is the de facto bosslady of the coven of three, the guy who plays Bill's number 2 at Hendrickson's Home Plus (he is hilarious), the guy who plays Roman's tightly wound son. Margine is a riot --she tells people she lost her husband in the Gulf War, but she's like 22 and her kids are all under 3. The Prophet runs around in his fancy suits and Hummers while the faithful live in tar paper shacks and look like they shopped for clothes at a rummage sale in the 1890's. Roman's wives attacking Bill in their pioneer-day nightgowns was priceless. |
