My daughter and I have a short tradition of seeing a show in NYC for her bday. We saw Hairspray one year and Putnam County Spelling Bee last year. I've heard Ave Q is great, hipster muppets singing funny songs. But is it PG-13 funny or R funny?

Definitely R-funny. There's a full-on explicit puppet sex scene that defies description - no joke!

It's a funny show - the song titles might help you decide if you're comfortable taking your daughter:

http://www.avenueq.com/soundtrack.html

Also from the site:

"Who is AVENUE Q appropriate for?

Adults love AVENUE Q, but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it's appropriate for kids. We'll try to clear that up. AVENUE Q is great for teenagers because it's about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because AVENUE Q addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. It's hard to say what exact age is right to see AVENUE Q - parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this - if you DO bring your teenagers to AVENUE Q, they'll think you're really cool."

Melonious - I agree with Project that it's R -rated. Have you seen Wicked? I have not seen it, but I understand it's a huge hit among the 10-16 year old girl set

Here's a lyric from one song from Avenue Q to help you decide- "Grab your d*** and double-click for porn, porn, porn." I saw both and would highly recommend Wicked over Avenue Q for a family outing. I'm 29 and would feel weird seeing Avenue Q with my mom. It's funny, though!

Oh. My. God. Very glad I checked with you guys. Pippi, WIcked is the obvious choice, but to see it this summer, I am about a year too late. It's still a very hot ticket.

I just got tix for Wicked from a broker online...paid a premium but it's the one thing my daughter wanted for her birthday (in May). So tickets ARE available, just not cheap. Or if you can go during the week, you might be able to get omething.

I actually DID see Avenue Q with my mom (and I am just a tad older than 13). The thing is, she had seen it already and liked it so much and thought that I would like it, too, so she got tickets. I enjoyed it immensely.

Wicked is certainly a more age appropriate show. Enjoy!

Avenue Q is definately not appropriate. It's hysterically funny for adults, but I wouldn't take anyone under 16 at the very least.

Wicked is very age appropriate.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a bit more risque (think PG-13) and very funny. But I'd say that Wicked is your best bet.

Yes... without out a doubt... R humor.

If you have iTunes, you can preview some of the songs.
Click the link.

It did love it though. Listen to "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada" (the end of the song)
That was probably my favorite along with "The Internet is for Porn"

What about The Light in the Piazza? It's romantic. There's one scene where sex is suggested (and there's some infidelity/marital woes). But I'd say it's definitely PG-13.

Other than telecharge, is there any reliable place I can get fairly priced tickets for about a month from now for any shows?

If you have the time, and if you are near enough, I would recommend going to the box office. You can select your seat from the seating chart, and you don't have to pay the insane Telecharge surcharge.

Otherwise, there are ticket "brokers", but you did mention "fairly priced" tickets, so that would rule out those people.

Ess, your just 13??!? I would have never guessed. I'm very impressed. I mean that as a complement. I'm serious. If your parents are reading this, I must say you did a very impressive job raising that one.

Alley - I don't know where you got that one! I am an adult in my 30s with children of my own. That doesn't preclude me from doing things with my mom.

And if you were being sarcastic, well..........

"Alley - I don't know where you got that one!

Most likely from when you said you were just a tad over 13...

Hard to detect a tone on a message board.

Oh -- when I said "just a tad", I really meant 25 years (or something like that).

I'll thank my parents anyway.

Hehehehehehhe.... I didn't think you could be that witty and intelligent at age 13. I think the low resolution Wonder Woman icon was throwing off my common sense, I guess.
