Hoops, I considered posting it in S/P but I'm weary of the squabbling. The libs will like it, the usual suspects will trash it, I figured here I'd be reaching a less jaundiced crowd.

further proof that simple voices raised in song can have tremendous effect. The imagery used was just a bit off, and I wonder if that wasn't part of the point.
Thanks ina, for posting that, i bought the song legally and am/will playing/(play) it for everyone I know. And I vote. early and often

Reminds me of when Elvis Costello wrote "Tramp the Dirt Down" about Margaret Thatcher. Another great political statement song. give it a listen sometime if you havent

Thanks, I think I have that somewhere. I seem to recall it had Elvis' head mounted on a plaque. Was that the album that he worked with Paul Mccartney? (Pads, Paws & Claws, & this town)...

For the benefit of those who don't know the song of which zen and I speak. Herewith are the lyrics, but you really have to listen to the song cause the music and melody so completely betray the song's sentiments in a Miss Otis Regrets sort of way.
Tramp the Dirt Down---D. McManus (Elvis Costello 1989)

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his
only son
And how it's only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you" straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and
maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

One of the best political songs written after 1980.
hmmmm..that might be a good thread....

Duncan -

I thought of "Tramp the Dirt Down" too - that song always gives me chills - esp. the line "Can you imagine, all that greed and avarice, coming down, on that child's lips?"

A (much more powerful) song that Pink's song reminds me of is "Dear Mr. Man" by Prince, I think it's on Musicology.

While I agree with Pink's lyrics, it needs the video to make an impact, I don't think it stands up by itself.

you are right lydia. Imagery makes a big difference. Much the way the music to TTDD makes that song so freaky. The almost lullaby melody and the uulean pipes and the power of his anger.

wow....powerful video and lyrics. Pink scored big with this one. I saw her on TV recently singing her new song, "Stupid Girls". I like what she puts out there.

Duncan,

Yes! I remember when "Spike" came out, I listened to TTDD how many times (?) before I got what it was about.

God's Comic was another one - it's "God IS Comic".

The other song on Spike that gives me chills is "Any King's Shilling" - again took me awhile to get it. Elvis C. lulls me in with melody and a beautiful song and once I listen to the lyrics the song transforms into something timeless.

Yea, Any Kings Shilling. Has that same style of lulling you into a comfortable melody and then stinging you with the realities of what the song is about.
Shipbuilding does that, and A Good Year for the Roses as well.
