I don't know about the rest of you, but I think this PBS presentation of South Pacific, with Alec Baldwin as silly sailor, Billis, and the wonderful guy who played Don Quixote on Broadway recently in "Man of La Mancha" (I can't remember his name right now) are terrific!!!
I am so glad PBS is beginning to get its act together, now that the Administration isn't harassing them anymore for being unAmerican.

Even though everyone is reading from their scripts, it's still pretty good.

Of course, I'm partial to "South Pacific."

Well, Brian Stokes Mitchell was so fantastic, I almost forgave the format. Reba was an interesting twist...the real thing when it comes to what Nellie Forbush was supposed to be like. It was also unusual to have the children be darker in skin color. It sort of drums home the prejudice and race issue inherent in the whole play.
I liked Alec Baldwin's rendition of Billis' "Honey Bun." I really thought it was hysterical. You don't expect him to do a role like that, so the surpise factor made it twice as funny. I also like his spin on Billis' accent, making it "Brooklynese." Cute!!

On a snowy January night in 2003 on Broadway, my family and I saw the audience rise to their feet to applaud Brian Stokes Mitchell for his performance in Man of La Mancha. There was definitely a "star is born" feeling in that theater as snow came down furiously outside.
This performance, at Carnegie Hall (South Pacific) with the audience again rising to their feet was so reminiscent. Really, his voice seems to come from a heavenly place. Not to mention how handsome he is!!!

You can't be partial to not liking Reba: "You've got to be taught."
