Peter Becker at Music of The World in Summit. He used to work at Mandolin Bros, I believe. He is a great guy too and my guitars sound great

Another option: Bill at Dave's Sound Repair (973) 386-5840 on Route 10 in Whippany. Dave H. is one of the amp-gods of New Jersey and Bill is pretty good holding up the guitar end of the operation. Just call before you go for driving landmarks and to make sure Bill is there.

listen, i don't want to make too big of a stink about this, but i picked up my bass today from summit world of music, and the tune-up was so bad that the guy just looked at me and said 'just pay us for the strings, and that's ok'. i'm not kidding; he was as nice as can be, but couldn't even act like anything had been done to my bass in the 7 days i left it there. unbelievable.

there are 2 guys there. Peter Becker is the one to go to. If he screwed up your guitar, that stinks.
Sorry to send you there if it did not work out. He did a great job on mine. Try Mandolin Bros. They have the best rep.

i totally understand. i don't want anyone to think that the message board let me down. i was happy to find a place close by, but i'll probably just wind up going to dave's (or my guitar guy in the east village). i have a gig on the 19th, so i'll go back to the drawing board after that. thanks for all the kind and helpful responses.

Just got an old Ibanez strat back from Dave's - Billy did the tune up. The guitar is great! New life into old strings. You might say why bother with an old ibanez, but this was one of the "lawsuit" guitars from mid '70's. Better IMO than the Fenders of that time.

Yeah, Dave's or Odibella Music in Bergenfield are the way to go. Billy at Dave's sound just setup my Tele Custom and did an amazing job. I take my acoustics over to Odibella and they haven't failed me yet!

Leny, Sorry you had a bad experience. I sometimes wonder if most so-called "techs" think that merely putting on new strings is setting up a guitar. A guy who did a lousy job adjusting the neck and intonation gave me the excuse that he didn't realize that I wanted a "real" adjustment. According to this jerk, most players can tell if their guitar is set up right! Any one else hear anything this stupid?

hi, veritas. i was wondering the same thing ... i mean, it seems like all they want to do is put some new strings on, twist the trust rod a little, and charge you $50 (plus strings at $45, of course). i asked them to check the electronics, too ... that obviously never happened. i was extremely disappointed. oddly, i took the bass home, and taught myself how to do the repairs: as frightening as that may sound, my bass has never sounded better. i don't think i'll be doing the same to my gibson j-150.

I think what happens is that when you bring your axe in, unless it's totaly f@#ked, the tech is going to work with what he's given. A good tech will ask alot of questions about how you play and what you like or are missing and go from there. If you're happy with the action and electrics, you're probably better off just polishing and re-stringing yourself. At least it's alot cheaper. I go to a tech when I have a problem I know I shouldn't try to resolve myself. IMHO

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mandolin Brothers of Staten Island here. Trust me, it's closer than you think - PL me if you need directions. I've not taken my guitar there yet, but thats where I would go.

Mandolin Brothers is actually much closer than you might imagine. There used to be some pretty amazing instruments in display cases that would make a trip worthwhile. As to having them work on a guitar,when I went there (about ten years ago) with a modest guitar, I was told they really weren't interested in doing work on it. However, times change and I'm sure folks living in South Orange and Maplewood these days have only worthy guitars. (P.S. Be advised that on some transactions, Mandolin Brothers imposes a surcharge for credit cards which it calls a discount for cash payment.)

Which is good for them, if they can get away with it, because the credit card companies don't have a minimum charge. I, personally, wouldn't waste my gas and tolls to find out if if my instrument was worthy of their remedial consideration. (Read as "Kiss my axe!)}
