I need to spruce up my collection. I'm a fan of Sarah, Carmen, Ella, Astrud, Patti (Tuck and...), Betty, Paula Morelenbaum, Jane Monheit, Diana Krall...you get the idea.

Favorite CDs from them or others?

If you haven't already, definitely pick up Dianne Reeves' outstanding soundtrack to "Good Night and Good Luck" - perfection from start to finish.

I can also strongly recommend the sultry and confident alto of Canadian chanteuse Holly Cole. The bulk of her catalog is comprised of standards, but she branches out into pop every now and then. Her album "Temptation" (a collection of Tom Waits covers) made me a fan, and is a must-own. :-)

You really need to check out Kate McGarry. She is FANTASTIC.

From All About Jazz

Quote:

"Kate McGarry scores a big one with Mercy Streets, making this recording one of the most important vocal recordings of the year."

I saw McGarry sing with Fred Hersch at Zankell Hall, performing his "Leaves of Grass" songs--very good. She and Kurt Elling did Hersch (and Whitman) proud!

If you want some great straight ahead interpertations of classic songs, as well as some driving swing, Keely Smith still sounds great--"Vegas 58" on Concord is a fine CD, recorded 2 years ago at Feinstein's in the city

Now my disclosure, I'm on the CD, but bias aside, she sounds wonderful.

Shirley Horn did some beautiful CDs in the last 10 or so years of her life "You Won't Forget Me" has great tunes, esp. the title track--Miles Davis was featured, recorded a few months before his death. The entire performance is haunting

How about Helen Humes or Julia Lee? I didn't see Nina's name mentioned but I figured she was included in the 'you get the idea' part :-)

Jazz isn't my fave...but do like Cassandra Wilson. If you haven't picked up the DVD of Diana Krall - Live in Paris ; Highly recommend to anyone.

Jeff, come into the SOPL and check out Stacey's other cds. You can try 'em before you buy 'em. Her family was gracious enough to donate some to the SOPL>

The Legendary Nancy Wilson calls herself a "song Stylist" but she is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES! I also know Jeannie Bryson personally and she's worth checking out.
