Tryouts are next weekend at the pool. Don't be nervous if you aren't sure you can meet the requirements; you'll get better quickly. Give it a try, you'll probably be In Like Fin (is that a fish joke?). The Maplewood Makos want YOU!!! Saturday, June 10} 8& UNDER -- 11:00 AM to noon Swim a total of 50 yards (that is just two widths of the pool, you can do that) using any two of the following strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke or Butterfly 9 & 10 years -- noon to 1:00 PM Dive in and swim a total of 75 yards (just three widths of the pool) using any three of the strokes listed above. Sunday, June 11th 11 & 12 years -- noon to 1:00 PM Dive in and swim 100 yards (a total of four widths of the pool) using each of the four strokes in any order. 13 & Up -- 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Dive in and swim 100 yards (a total of four widths of the pool) using each of the four strokes in any order. Practices are on weekday mornings, swim meets are generally on weekday evenings. The coaches are cool, and so is the water in June. |

I don't think that this schedule is correct, for Saturday at least. There is a Girl Scout pool party at the pool starting at Noon and usually (in past years at least) the swim team tryouts have started much earlier (9AM?) and ended at least an hour before the party started. Hopefully someone with "official" knowledge can confirm or correct the tryout information. (I know that the Girl Scout info is correct but I don't know about the swim team.) |

The times are from the Maplewood Rec. Department flyer. |

Well ... something has been messed up somewhere because there is no way that tryouts and a pool party can happen at the same time. The Girl Scouts will be contacting the recreation department on this ASAP and hopefully aspiring swim team members and/or their coaches will do so also. |

Just to clarify, I did read that part of the post that says practices are on weekday mornings -- what time, and how long? |

Wilkanoid, I can't recall exactly at what hour swim team practices start; after Commuter Swim is over and before the swimming lessons start. It's around 8:00 a.m. My kiddo brought home a flyer from school announcing swim team tryouts. The times posted above are correct. |

Tis true ... it seems that both events will be going on simultaneously. Not sure who thought that was a good idea or how it happened. Swim team folks should look for signs directing you to the appropriate pool entrance upon arrival. If you want to miss the worst chaos, I recommend that you come to the early session (11:00 AM) or, better, on Sunday. Hordes of Girl Scouts will be arriving at about Noon. (As I recall from when my child tried out once, the coaches aren't really picky about what time you come based on age.) |

Sunday sounds like better weather. I think my kids will avoid the Girl Scouts and come then. In the past, practice ran from 7:15 to 8:45 every weekday morning, starting the day after high school graduation. |

According to the schedule posted there is no CHOICE about when to come for tryouts. It just depends on your age. My kid may be doing both GS and Makos tryout simultaneously, at high noon. |

For kids who are Girl Scouts that works great! Despite what the posted schedule says, they have always tried out whoever showed up whenever they arrived, regardless of age. I can't imagine that changing this time, especially with this conflict situation.
