Borrowing a lead in. Anyway, didn't think it was great, but it had some very funny bits I thought. Weird reactions to it:

1. Seemed like Jennifer and Vince were playing themselves (and I could see the attraction). At the same time, her part seemed inconsistent as to whether she was an uptown girl, or what (bowling team, game night)

2. The big melt-down fight struck me as incredibly real (as in, I've had that exact fight).

3. Greatly enjoyed their strategies for getting revenge on each other; the plot seemed rather drawn from life -- overall writing kind of weak, but individual scenes seemed good.

3. Didn't like the end (neither fish nor fowl).

Anyone else see it? It was no Wedding Crashers...

I thought it was pretty good overall. Both were good in it. Jon Favreau, and the two Vinces were very funny in the first half. It got unexpectedly sad in the 2nd half. Big fight was very raw and real- I found myself in tears and I didn't expect that reaction to this movie at all. Probabaly too close to home on that one. End was terrible but better than cookie cutter sap I guess.

Doesn't Jennifer always play herself? I, for one, never saw her as a serious actress.

I also was, unexpectedly,in tears watching this movie. I realized that it probably hit a little too close to home for me. As in, been there, done that...don't need to see the movie! Plus I thought that all the funny bits were already shown in trailers/commercials. I was disappointed. I had high hopes for it.

I'm quite fine with Jen playing herself, if indeed that is her true self. Doesn't Vince always play himself? I know Jack Nicholson always does. Meg Ryan tried desperately not to play the version of herself that everyone loves (You've Got Mail, Harry/Sally, etc.) and now has no career (The Cut, On the Ropes). (Too bad, bc I loved the old MR movies, and MR.) LOVE George Clooney and LOVE that he is always playing himself.

I'm ok with actors playing themselves if I enjoy that persona. While being a chameleon is one trait of a gifted actor (Joaquin Phoenix, Chris Cooper, David Straithern), I think it is also a gift to be able to transmit your persona in the artificial situation of movie making. HOw many of us can be ourselves saying someone else's words with tech crew all around, hot lights and cameras in our faces, take after take after take?

I gotta admit that I like the stuff from the tearful breakdown through his bartender friend telling Vince it's all about him through his brother and the books. And then, the business of Vince taking it to heart and doing something with it. This was a lot like an old boyfriend situation of mine, and I guess it was cathartic to me.

As a movie, though, it did seem kinda patchwork. Comedy? Other stuff? Just kind of uneven. I personally really like Vince Vaughn and would trade him for Brad Pitt any day of the week. If he's playing himself, I'm OK with that. I hope she marries him, and vice-versa.
