Just be sure your kids remain seated when the community band plays Sousa outdoors. Even if they are 2 years old. Or the band leader will get "distracted."

The idea of the outdoor concerts is that the kids do not stay seated and Daddy can drink his "Daddy Sodas" in peace. |

If you want your kids to run around screaming, the playground is just a block away. A concert is for listening. If your kids are old enough to walk and talk, they're old enough to learn how to behave appropriately in public situations. |

We'll stay at the playground next time, not that anyone was screaming. Kids were playing during very longwinded recitation of upcoming shows, when suddenly the guy snapped out. It was awkward. A lot of the older audience members had been looking on and smiling as the children played. Some people like stuff like that. We weren't the only parents who left. |

I'm not even that old Tom.... and it's not just an outdoor concert, it's a time and place to give us the opportunity to groove to some good tunes, enjoy daddy juice discreetly, meet friends, meet new friends, lighten up your load and relax, frolic a bit, and perhaps even frolic with others. Kids can play and not be too bothersome, just lean back let the tunes and everything else wash over you until you are well undone.... |

At least don't bring bats and balls to keep the kids entertained during the concerts, like one family did last summer. Set the kids up right next to us and I had to keep dodging swinging bats and asking the boys to move, while the parents had a grand time. Running kids I don't mind--a bat to the head can make me really cranky. |

By the way - the music was great, and it was a nice concert. Didn't mean to be a complainer. I'll bite my tongue next time. |

My wife and I, along with our 1 1/2 and 4-year-old children were at the concert, having just arrived when the bandleader went off about kids making noise. He came across as a mean old man given that: > we're talking about young children here -- it's outdoors -- it's a concert -- and they are supposed to be quiet? > the NY Philharmonic and Central Park this ain't -- chill out buddy, you had 25 people in the audience the joke is, 15 minutes later, my little guy was toddling around, stopped in front of the band after they finished playing a song and started clapping. Several of the band members started giggling. At that point, the bandleader admonished them: "You need to concentrate!"

Wow, The band leader, who does more for the arts programing in this town than anyone, is kind of taking a beating. Maybe he had a tough night -cut him some slack. |

I'm sure that's so ... But he did yell at the parents of some small children -- who were laughing, running around, and making some noise -- to quiet up their kids. These two sets of parents immediately scooped up their kids and ran out of the place. The band leader may be a good guy and good for the community, but he wasn't very nice that day. |

Pippster btw, congrats on Jr note (would that be a 16th or 32nd?) Anyways, the bands are running about 1/2 hr each...there's so many people that wanted to play! It starts at 11:30 with the band VENGANCE, and then continues through the day untill dark with the bands listed above. Once again this is a free show to the public. We were able to get some funds from the town and a couple of 'Angels' that came up with a few bucks. There will be a 50-50 raffle through the course of the day to try and help defray some of the costs. We have merchants lined up for food and T-shirts printed, and can use any volunteers that want to help. We'll be having a final planning meeting next week and I'll post any final details. It's gonna be a great day. No Rain! No Rain! No Rain! |

I've been playing outdoor summer concerts for years, and in my opinion, kids running around only add to the atmosphere, not detract from it. You want the kids jumping up and down, doing somersaults, screaming when the band is playing tired old warhorses like Sousa marches. If you want people seriously listening to your music, then book a hall and play proper concerts ... the wind ensembles and orchestras that I have played in do this, and in those situations, we wouldn't tolerate toddlers runing around and screaming. But, in outdor summer concerts, where the daddy sodas and the teenager cigarettes are flowing free, all rules of decorum are off. Don't let the actions of one sour bandleader put you off to the hard work that the Maplewood bands out in to make your summers more enjoyable.

My kid and I had a blast and it funny to run in to some who had yet me meet me, but know of my life via MOL. It was a pleasure to meet all of you for however brief a time it was. As usual the music was outstanding. The food as well. I only wish we could have planted ourselves there for the day, but we leave Monday for some R&R in Florida and some fly fishing for snook. (someone out there must appeciate what a blast that will be..snook and snapper Up and Down!!) Like I said, it is my dream to be the second guitarist in someone's band next summer!!!! I will come and audition for anyone.. Well done Jamie, and Chill...I should have made a movie of you making a movie and the playing and the making the movie again. Well done!!! I'll check in from the undoubtedly ridiculously hot and humid Florida (pray for no 'canes) Again...for the third year in a row (for me anyway) this was a stellar event. I think Jamie should run for TC..................nah, never get enough signatures.

Good going on the vids, but egads, WMV's, way to go. Sure glad I have Flip4Mac installed and can view them via Quicktime. I would have at least converted them to something else, oh I don't know an avi file, or even a flash file would be better than wmv's. Did I say good job, good job...., and the sound is great. |
