Ok.. So I am starting to hit up my friends for money too. I have sent out an email asking for 20 bucks from everyone (since that is about the cost of going to a movie when you add in the popcorn and all) since that is the fourth point in the Freshwater Films mission statement. If any of you should choose to do the same thing... well lets say I wouldn't refuse the help. Making a good short film is expensive ( I saw a 20 minute short that cost over 80K) so I have to keep reaching out. If you want to share this unique experience with any of your friends and see if they want to help the paypal is at www.freshwater-films.com and checks/money orders (made out to Duncan Rogers...since the bank acct was made before the company became an official LLC) can be sent to Duncan M. Rogers Freshwater-Films PO Box 68 Maplewood, NJ 07040 Never hurts to ask. |

ok, so who wants to sent a note to the News Record that this film is happening as a result of this web site? I have sent that place press release after press release and the ask for pictures and info and I send it to them and they never run anything. So if someone else emails them maybe we can get a little ink in the local paper and a little more support will jump on board.

Aren't there a couple of people who work at the New York Times who live here, perhaps they can do a piece? Matters Magazine? MOL advertisers that may want to help? Product Placement, soda bottle on the desk, computer, marbles, post-its, copier machine, etc. |

Monster...product placement is a great idea, but for shorts, companies are usually only gonna give you the product and not any cash. I am completely swamped by myself, trying to produce a film this fast alone. But it is starting to come together. I will check with Maplewood Matters, but they only come out, what like 4 times a year. I will contact the people I know and if anyone reading this writes for Record, Ledger or Times I would suggest that this is a great human interest feature piece.

Anotherkittie...I don't have one of those yet, since I am literally a one man band in the pre-production zone. I am trying to find a crew, manage finding the money, deciding on casting...whether to go SAG or not, securing insurance, trying to find someone to score it when its done, edit it when its done and all the rest that a production crew of 5 folks usually handles by myself under a really quick time frame. So press releases so far have amounted to my sending two emails to two friends of mine one at NPR and one at NYT. beyond that. I got nothing. When I do (he says snorting milk out his nose from laughing so hard) I will send it over for you to take a look. A professional eye would be really helpful. |

Duncan, Going back to product placement, possibly some local businesses would like to participate. For example, a local restaurant's take-out menu is pinned to the cubicle wall or a flyer from HTTA or the Underground Concert Series and maybe even an MOL bumper sticker is displayed. This would tie the short back to the Maplewood community.

bless your heart. What I had mentioned before was just the emails I had sent to my friends in the industry. You know, I didnt even send the News Record a note cause they have asked for pictures and stuff in the past and then run a story about an art show in Scotch Plains. So I have no idea where their priorities are.

anotherkittie is there and chance I could pick you brain as to the best way to promote this in such a way as to raise money. Sadly that is what is my biggest deficit right now. I am being given space, and props, and even coffee makers to sell on ebay, and some wonderful MOL people have literally donated to the cause. Like I said in this or another thread...I need a patron or patroness with lots of disposable cash who would think this was a cool idea.

SO Ref that is a great idea, although I wouldn't know how to put a value on that sort of PP, since the film will, hopefully and it is my intention, travel the festival circuit. Local PP would be cool for a screening in Maplewood/South Orange, maybe even the Garden State Film Festival, or the Hope and Dreams FF, or one or two of the other Jersey fests, but beyond that I don't know what value the donor would get from it. I dare say that Charlie and his Stationers store hasn't seen an increase in business despite the fact that THE READER (in which Charlie and his store are prominently shown on screen) has been to 17 festivals from Woods Hold on Cape Cod to Anchorage Alaska and Waikailu Hawaii. I think in terms of local merchants help, that might be more in line with the fundraiser that is in the works. Donate a Gift Cert. or a service or something that could then be auctioned off. If you have an idea for how to make local PP work I am all ears. I will listen to anything and anyone for creative ideas. Thanks again SORefugee for thinking of it. I would love to puzzle the way through the above listed problem. |

AK I didn't get anything from you this morning Did you PL me or email me? please, try again, I really would love your thoughts. I am drowning in stuff and am trying to triage things, but knowledge is power. try duncan*at*freshwater-films*dot*com or Duncan*at*duncanmrogers*dot*com I look forward to reading your thoughts. Thanks for thinking of the project. I am ever grateful to everyone on MOL who has aided this effort. The exec director of the Big Island Film Festival loved the idea and looks forward to seeing it. So if I can get him to program BUST and I've Just Lost My Marbles then I would definately go. Unlike this year, when I stayed behind for a lesser fest. |

Hey, I'm back and the movie is back and if I can cast it soon I can shoot it by late august. Which would rock! So keep those cards and letters with suggestions and info coming. I was gone for a week and it feels like a month. |

I'm back again and am hiring crew folks. I think I have my DP, but if anyone has a suggestion for sound recordist/artist that would be HUGE. As this is essentially a silent film, the sound design will have a very important role along side the score to create much of the tension and dénouement of the piece. So if you know anyone PL me or email me at duncan at freshwater-films. com |

Duncan, When I graduated from M.H.S., class members made a short 10' film that was quite good (from the point of a 17 yr. old anyway). Point is, class members who wanted a part in the film could do so by paying $10., which was good money in 1960. I don't know if your film lends itself but maybe you could offer a spot/cameo in your film for a donation. By the way, when is the F.T.F. fundraiser for your film? JC |

Hey John. I have always been uncomfortable with the pay to play thing. I have seen too much of it in my life. No one has to pay a dime to be an extra. I will need many. I have made my PayPal link avaialable to everyone on line and many have gone there and they have my thanks. But I would rather find a benefactor who wants to put up three thousand dollars for an Executive Producer credit. I have a budget that I am working with. Most of it is my own money, and everyone says never put your own money into a film, but this is a little one so I and my wife don't feel bad about it. And the F2F fundraiser, as far as I know right now, is set for Sept 9th. I have just returned from a week in FLA. then three days trying to hire a DP (which I did) and then back on the road to Cape Cod for the weekend. I expect to do much more hiring and starting of balls rolling this week and set a shoot date of late august. But, in case the paypal link has gotten so buried in the thread. Any and all donations from 5 bucks to 5,000 are welcome. However unlike PBS you won't get a cool mug or DVD of Bruce's latest. I could probably make you an iron on transfer t-shirt with my logo on the back and "supporter" on the front, like Jamie and Dave did out here! But the will get my gratitude and the knowledge that you helped a guy make a movie about something that happened right here on MOL That link again is Right here, towards the bottom of the page. Thanks again to one and all who have visited. And thanks in advance to any who choose to go there now. |
